[BUG] Fatal crash when I'm trying to nest anything on my timeline

Hello! I'm trying to nest some elements of my timeline, but i'ts impossible. When I click the nest icon, vegas just crash for a reason.

This is an example with my normal timeline:

And, this is an example with a very simple timeline, with only one image and a text:

Another thing, not sure it is a bug or intended: if your create a nest with a video event with audio, and then delete the audio track from the nest, and then try to go back to the main, it asks to find a replacement file, it is seems to be confused about the media streams not matching, and your main event remains offline, and this cannot be fixed or repaired...

I would expect the main event to loose its audio, but now the event is unusable as it cannot get out of offline, nor a replacement can fix this.

@Former user How is your setting of "close media files when not the active application" ?

@bitman Hi, Mine was enabled, both the media & audio were ticked, I unticked them & created the same nest as I did earlier with the two ProRes clips, added a crossfade & BCC+Ambient Light, returned to Parent nest. Then came to this site to find this post, went back to Vegas - no crash.

We'll see, i'll keep trying & update as n when 🤷‍♂️

@bitman I've been playing with this for about 6hrs, opening & closing it, adding stuff,changing stuff, watching crap on BBC iPlayer, doing other stuff in Vegas, the nested project opens everytime & hasn't crashed once 🤷‍♂️🤣

When nesting wasn't working in Vegas 21, I tried Vegas 20 and Vegas 19. Nesting wouldn't work in any version. This had to be a result of Microsoft updates. I uninstalled and reinstalled Vegas 21 and did a reset. Now nesting works in Vegas 21. Vegas 19 and 20 are still broke. I guess I will need to reset those as well. I'll try resetting without uninstalling and reinstalling.

Just reset Vegas 19 and 20 without uninstalling and reinstalling. Now nesting works in those versions as well.

@bitman I keep trying nesting, leaving it open or closing it while I do other stuff & haven't had problems with it since I turned off those two options in Preferences 👍

@Former user Indeed, the nesting stability seems to benefit from unticking "close media files when not the active application" for video & audio. But I am sure there are drawbacks as well, like for example minimizing an active Vegas and handling the same media in an external application such as a photo or audio editor ...

Maybe there is something changed in the more recent Vegas builds that using nesting becomes more vulnerable than in the past, @VEGASDerek can this be investigated, or get some extra test effort?

@bitman I use Gimp opened from the OtterBar to edit photos which works without problem with those boxes unticked, but if I right click 'Edit in Vegas Effects' I get this msg, I don't use Vegas Effects, for me it's more trouble then it's worth esp with the Boris fxs so I'm quite happy to leave them unticked & have nesting working 👍
