Building sound peaks

When ever you open a file it starts to building sound peaks & if you are looking at a large file this can take quite some time. I have tried clicking cancel down in the left hand corner next to explorer but this doesn't always seem to work. Is it possible to get them turned off all of the time & only get them recreated if & when they are necessary. I understand that there only purpose is as a visual aid for matching up sound. Is this correct?

It's Vegas' reference to the level and peaks of the original file. Vegas needs it. But it is only created once; the data is kept in a small filed called .sfk. If you delete that, Vegas will recreate it every time.

Exactly. They're drawn once and when you further re-open those, they shouldn't bother you anymore. And these SFK files don't take that much space on your drives considering the time you save when you re-open projects...

However :
There's a switch you can turn on or off but that'll kill the frames in video events too... (Options/Preferences/General/check or uncheck "draw waveforms and frames in events")
