building the perfect mask

Vegas Pro 8.0c
I'm a noob when it comes to masks.
I have some footage of a table of cupcakes with colorful frosting.
I'd like to keep the frosting colors and make everything else b/w.
I've been playing with the Secondary Color Corrector but am having a hard time getting a mask of just the frosting or just the "rest". The masks also have jagged edges so the composite still has b/w jaggy edges. I'd like to build a mask with smooth edges of just the frosting or just the rest of the cupcake. Perhaps I'm going about this all wrong.
Please help (with frosting on top)....

This forum doesn't seem to let me post images. How to 'zap' to you?

Click on my NAME and that will take you to my email. Email me > I respond > you can then attach!

If you want to display here, you make a link to where you have this available for showing on the web. Making links see the Sticky on top of this forum.

Forget the secondary color corrector. Use the free Colorlab plugin available from http://aav6cc.blogspot.com/

This allows you easily to control red, green, blue, cyan, magenta and yellow color channels, as well as hue and saturation. Although it's still in beta, it's rock solid for me, and does an absolutely fabulous job of producing the color effects I need. (I use it instead of Magic Bullet Looks).

If your footage is DV, try using the chroma blur FX beforehand. This will get rid of jaggy/square/boxy chroma.

- I would prefer the secondary CC over the aav6cc plugin in this case.

Hi TFL! Are you running the 32-bit Vegas version? I had the ancient - now - aa6cc preset. Did you delete this first? Are we supposed to install the - ColorLab + TransLab v1.0b4 (32-bit) - d/l?

Hello Grazie!

Yes, I am running Vegas under 32 bit Windows (at least until Friday, when Vista Ultimate will be available to students/teachers in the UK for just £41 - scroogle for the Ultimate Steal).

I did uninstall the previous version of aav6cc before installing ColorLab, but I don't think this is necessary as ColorLab is more a replacement than a upgrade for aav6cc. If you have projects that use aav6cc, then don't delete it. Use it and ColorLab in tandem.

A 64bit version of ColorLab will be available when the author receives the support/information he needs from Sony.

Thanks for the suggestions all. The Chroma Blur FX helps a lot! This is the usual case of something I think is easy turns out to be not so easy. I'm in the process of building 3 masks for 3 different frosting colors.
I'll also check out the aav6cc plugin.

Jumping right into the deep end of the masking pool... : o

thanks again
