Burn to DVD+RW doesn't burn

Ron Lucas wrote on 2/7/2003, 4:45 PM
Using the release version 1.0 of DVDA, I created a small project and tried to burn to my HP dvd200i. DVDA goes through the process and says it completed without errors. But there is nothing on the DVD. My disk is a DVD+RW with old data on them. DVDA recognizes this and asks to overwrite the disk and I say yes. During the burn stage, the drive spins up and lights up for a couple of seconds when DVDA says it is complete.

Here are the details at completion:

'SFMMCX'-(17)
'atapi'-(1)
-'HP DVD Writer 200j 1.36'-(0)
Module sfmmcx.cpp Line 1158
The command completed successfully.
No sense.

I burned was able to burn this same project to another DVD+RW disk on the same computer and drive that also had old data, but now it doesn't anymore.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ron

I tried the same using the sony dvd burner. When I try it asks me the same question
if I want to overwrite the dvd+rw and I say yes. It starts then quickly ejects the dvd with the same error as you got.

However, when I try to burn a NEW dvd+r it completes the job no problem! I like to
test projects on dvd+rw before I burn to dvd+r as I hate dvd coasters.

Lets stay on top of this!!!!

OK, just successfully burned a DVD+RW with data on it using SONIC MYDVD! I would assume my Sony DVD Burner works fine, so I would assume the problem is the interface between DVD Architecture and my Sony DVD Burner.

PLEASE HELP ME SUPPORT! I feel as if though I should JUST HAVE PURCHASED Vegas 4.0
and NOT the DVD-A!

I've noticed something peculiar to DVD+RW disks, also. I have a HP DVD200i.

Virgin DVD+RW disks seems to burn without a problem. However, disks that already have data on them have been giving me problems. I don't get the same error as you two, but this is what I've noticed:

1. If the problematic DVD+RW disk is in the drive before I start DVDA, DVDA won't even start. I get the start-up screen and then an dialog box stating that DVDA has caused an error. DVDA then closes. Sorry -- don't have exact text of message handy.

2. I can write to the same DVD+RW disks using other DVD software I have (RecordnowMax 4.50).

3. If I "trick" DVDA by inserting the disk after the program starts, I still can't burn the disk. The first tell-tale sign that it won't work is that it shows only blanks in the burn speed drop-down menu. DVDA then times out with a IOCTL error when it tries to burn the disk.

4. I found that if I did a "quick erase" of the disk using RecordNowMax, DVDA would then recognize the disk and burn to it without a problem.

5. DVD+R disks work without any issue.

DVDA is obviously grabbing some disk information prior to burning, and running into problems.

I can't defend SoFo, but you should see the support forums for DVD Workshop :) I much prefer SoFo support and software. Looking forward to DVDA 1.0a.

Anybody else have similar problems here? Please chime in.

Problems here too. I finally managed to make a -RW disc but I've made two -R coasters with no successes thus far. I have recieved cryptic error messages and have had the discs fail at various parts of the burn process. Very frustrating so far:

I also have the HP200i burner and I have experienced problem with +RW discs (after a couple of burns the disc can no longer be used). It is my understanding that this has something to do with the HP firmware (the disc is recognised as a RW but can't be "cleared" for writting) and that the latest firmware 1.51 is supposed to take care of this. I have downloaded the latest firmware from HP and since then I have been able to use old +RW's that couldn't be used before. However, on some of the discs the program (uses Record Now that came with the burner) needs to clear the disc two or three times before the disc is recognised as empty.

Thanks. Will try the firmware update and report back.

If you can't burn with DVDA, the FIRST thing you should do is get the drive's firmware current, and then if you still can't burn, send us the error message and the firmware rev. I had alll kinds of trouble with my Pionner A03, chased the problems for weeks...and a simple firmware update did the trick, no problems since.

I got brave and tried again. I beleive the firmware version for the DVR-104 is 1.33. If there is a more up to date firmware, please guide me. Here's the message I got on the error.

I also have this problem with my HP 200i. I've been using the demo copy of VV4/DVD-A, trying to decide between ReelDVD and the VV/DVD-A combo. If I could get past this problem, I would immediately place my order for VV/DVD-A...

Yesterday I upgraded the firmware in my HP 200i burner to 1.51 (the latest available), and I still get this error message when trying to burn the demo project (from Sonic Foundry's web site) to a DVD+RW that already contains data:

'SFMMCX'-(17)
'atapi'-(0)
-'HP DVD Writer 200j 1.51'-(0)

During this burn, the "writing lead-in" progress bar goes normally up to about 10%, then jumps to 100% and DVD-A says the disc was created successfully. The whole process takes only about 10 seconds, so it's obvious that it didn't work. This problem does not occur if the DVD+RW has never been written to.

Like I said, I am ready to buy VV4/DVD-A, but only if this problem can be resolved. I need to be able to burn a DVD+RW copy before committing a project to DVD+R. I've tried the demo copy of ReelDVD to compare it to DVD-A, and although ReelDVD has some great features (multiple audio tracks, subtitles, and infinitely customizable menus), those features come at a severe price (very steep learning curve, and the customizable menus, although very flexible, are a pain to create). DVD-A's AC3 capability, ease of use, integration with VV, and my prior experience with Sonic Foundry's products (Sound Forge and its plug-ins), give DVD-A the edge for my needs, but I need to have this issue resolved before I invest in the product...

Thanks,
Robert

Same problems here with used +RW discs !
I have a Memorex 2,4 x burner.
Tried to erase the disc in Nero first but no difference.
Finally I burned the Video_TS folder made by DVDA with Nero and it worked out fine.
Also looking forward to an upgrade fixing this problem.
But DVDA is a very good authoring program - have tested many others

That's exactly my symptom on my HP200i. I've tried 3 DVD+RW (Verbatim brand) that all had data previously written. DVDA can overwrite two of them but one it will not. I'm trying DVDit! again to see if it will overwrite it.

I'm at software version 1.36 on the HP200i, but am going to upgrade to 1.51.

I finally bought the program. I have the HP200i with the latest firmware (as reported above) and I'm able to burn to HP +RW discs which has been previously written to. DVD-A clears and burn the disc without any problem.
dvdfool wrote on 2/11/2003, 9:42 PM
I've also found the 1.51 firmware helped a lot with my dvd200i. I still needed to quick-erase the disk in RecordNowMax, though, on at least one occasion.

Upgrading my "Memorex DVD100" from F/W 1.06 to 1.51 solved this problem for me !

Hi. Exact same error that rwsjr reports, with my Pioneer A04.
I have the Pioneer's 1.4 firmware upgrade, which is the latest one that Pioneer makes available in a reasonable form. (At another page on their website, there's what purports to be a version 2 firmware upgrade --- but it's runnable only from DOS and requires very low-level manual intervention, and its instructions talk only about Windows 95 and 98. Because of the kludgey way it's packaged, and the out-of-date OS references, I don't believe it's really more recent than version 1.4, which Pioneer "packaged" in a way that knows about WinXP and does not require you to futz around in DOS. I suspect their version-numbering got out of whack.)
Anyway, if you're lucky enough to own Nero, you can ignore this problem. Design and build your DVD program in DVD-A, then burn it in Nero.
I find this kind of annoying, but even if DVDA can't burn discs for me, I'm still satisfied with the product for its Design environment, which offers lots more flexibility than I used to have with Dazzle's "DVD Complete".
