Burning 4x, pioneer 105 question

bob cor wrote on 6/28/2003, 7:50 AM
I have DVDA running on a W2K machine with a Pioneer 105 dvd burner. I have been trying to get it to burn at 4x speed, and I do not think it is. It takes 45min to produce a dvd with 1hr30min of video and 1 menu. The size of the disk is approx 4.2 GB.

I will choose the 4.0X speed in the DVDA buring menu, I have tried the trick of waiting to push in the tray until it asks for it.
I have upgraded the firmware of the 105 to 1.33.
I have tried 3 types of media- 2 of which were "4x certified", some generic, but even a Pioneer brand 4x disc took the same time.

Any suggestions?
Thanks
Bob

Hi Bob,

I'm not sure if your only talking about burning the DVD or rendering+burning the DVD. I just bought the Pioneer 105 (about a month ago) and I just finished (about a couple of minutes ago) burning an already prepared 1hr, 20min DVD in 12min, 38 secs. I'm using BMI, DVD-R, 4x disks and haven't had a problem yet.

Specs:
Pentium 4, 3.4 gHz
512 RAM
XP Pro,
ver 2002, Serv Pack 1
DVD Burner is connected to the IDE interface

Good thinking, I should have been clearer.

I am talking about just burning, let's say for a second copy of a dvd, where any render, menu creation, buttons, etc are already finished.

I have never gotten that speed out of the 105 - same thing as the A05.
My specs are:
DVDA rev C (the latest)
Dual PIII 1GHz
W2K serv pk 3 - I believe. I keep it updated regularly
Pioneer 105 (same as A05) firmware 1.33 (latest) connected to the IDE bus.

Thanks
Bob

Larry,

Could you tell us if you upgraded the firmware on your DVR-105? I just installed my DVR-105 today, and I saw the following post recommending NOT to upgrade:

>Don't upgrade to the latest firmware what ever you do.
>The latest firmware is 1.21 and if you do this you'll have to buy
>dvd media that is supported by the dvd forum.

>I habve a pioneer a05 and made themistake of upgrading to 1.21 and
>then the sky fell in. Took the drive back to get it replaced as it
>wouldn't burn to certain types of dvd media. Now have it back with
>firmware 1.00 and it burns most everything as before.

>It's a very good unit if you use 1.00 or 0.52 fimware.
>Problems start with 1.21 firmware. You'll only notice these problems
>if you buy the cheaper dvd media.

BTW, how do I tell what firmware version I have???????

I just upgrade my A05 firmware to version 1.31 and so far works great. I used
cheap media as well as good media with no problem. This is the latest firmware
since the date was June.

Hi,

Bob: I just wanted to make sure we're on the same page as far as the prepared vs render+prepare. I use DVDA to prepare the DVD in a directory (one time shot) and I use the files that are already prepared in this directory to create my duplicates. To make things easier, I open a new DVDA session just to burn my duplicates, in-other-words, I don't even see my original DVDA file that was used to create the already prepared files.

Firmware:

Disclaimer: Before you read any furthur, I want to claim that this is the first time I ever did anything with firmware and I'm not by any means more then a complete novice but when issues arise I will focus, focus, focus!!!

Sorry, after I posted my reply I remembered that I also read about firmware issues. I did change the firmware but for a different reason originally. I was trying to use an external USB 2.0 casing with the 105 but the firmware modification didn't help and Sonic doesn't support this setup and of course it didn't work.

This is what I did:
I went to the "http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pioneer/CDA/ServiceAndSupport/SelfHelpForIndDet/1,1457,92399,00.html" page and found the check firmware version, which I just duplicated again and I'm running the 1.21 firmware.

Then I went to the "http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php" --The firmware page index and read through a lot of messages. If u search for Pioneer 105 you'll probably find more then you need but the downgrade is there and the instructions as well. Sorry, I can't reproduce exactly what I did but I am now at 1.21 of course I don't know if 1.33b would work either?? Also, if you read through the msges you'll notice that people have completely disabled the drive if a problem occurs during the firmware change.

Good luck and may the firmware force be with u,

Larry

Mike-

check out a post a couple after your orig. post- there is a link to the pioneer web site. you can get a little app that is called firmware checker. It will tell you the revision of the drive.

Also- general ststement - I can burn good disks - I just can't seem to get to the 4x speed. All the dvd's I have burned have been playable.

After reading several posts on this forum and on one at videoguys.com, I found out that W2K can automatically put your DVD drive in a transfer mode that is not the fastest.

My 105 was in PIO mode, and this takes more CPU time and transfers data slowly. Switching to DMA mode allowed me to burn a 1hr50min DVD in 14minutes.
