Burning discs on older burners

Have any of you ever had a problem with your discs becoming less and less reliable as your burner gets older?

I've recently had a spate of discs that will play fine on either computer or settop DVD player, often for many plays, before the disc starts to skip or otherwise act squirrelly. On the one hand, I'm thinking it's the blanks I'm using; but I'm also wondering if the age of my burner (Sony DRU-510, about 3 years old) has anything to do with it.

Thoughts?

One of the things you may want to check is the mediacode of discs:
Over the years i have been using Fuji blanks without problems untill one day i got a batch which got me some problems. Later it appeared those weren't made by them anymore but by another company. Some websites feature that code when you order blank discs - changes should alert you. Also one handy tool to check that is here:
