Burning HD DVD

Since there is a lot of experience among forum members with burning HD DVD (3x), perhaps someone will have some insight on how to solve my peculiar problem. I am able to burn DVD+RWs without problem. I encode in V7 or V8 at 25 mbps, 1920x1080i, from Vegas to m2v (MainConcept codec). These files are then prepared and burned using ULEAD DVD Movie Factory 6. They play without problem in my Toshiba HDA2.

The difficulty arises when I burn the same files to DVD+R. The maximum bit rate that will play on the A2 is 8 mbps, far too low for good 1920 x 1080i viewing. Others have claimed no problem with DVD+R. Is my problem with my burner, or is there something I can do short of installing a new burner to make good DVD+Rs?

Thoughts and insights from any of you who have experience with HD DVD and the Toshiba A2 would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

(The DVD+RWs blanks I have been using are Memorex; the DVD+Rs are TDK and T-Y.)

You may want to try changing the "BookType" of the DVD+R disk to "DVD-ROM" before burning.
This is for better compatibility amoungest players.
Technically according to the Toshsiba A2 specs taken from the manual.

Recordable discs you can play on this player
DVD-RW
DVD-R
DVD-R for DL
CD-RW / CD-R

Above is what the manual says, so I would think anything outside of this is based on a good burn & compatibility issues. Of course use DVD-R if DVD+R isn't working.
I did have alot of trouble with the memorex DL +R disks, and it was the same problem you describe, the video probably skipped every second, pretty bad, yet some of the Sony +R DL's worked and some didn't. I gave up after reading the above spec's, but others are using the TDK +R DL's and claim they work. I returned my A2, figured in the end I would end up with to many disks to catalog.

Plus when HD_DVD dies what am I going to do with the disks ( only joking :)

I did switch to the AVCHD format though and it's working out better for my needs.

Thanks for the ideas. I did think of book type, but I have no way to change it on my HP burner. Maybe it's time for a new burner.

Installed a new burner (Sony DRX 840U). Even 3x DVD+Rs now play correctly in my Toshiba HDA2.
