burning speed at 1x not possible!??

Hi,

Mij Sony DVD burner 700A refuses to burn audio CD's on 1x of 2x, even if I select that burningspeed in Vegas.
I want to use these speeds for mastering on Redbook qualifications.
I already flashes the Firmware of the player, to the latest update and makes every possible choices in Windows to enable 1x or 2x speed burning
When starting with burning, just for a moment, vegas goes to 1x burning, but reset itself to 8x burning.
A lower speed is not possible
I have tried it with several masterdiscs, like Sony, Quantegy an Fuji, but they all act the same!

I hope that you can help me out with this matter!!

Greetings from The Netherlands

For quite a few year no drives have been able to write at very slow speeds. The info that "1x is good" is totally out-dated, and with modern media is actually untrue even if you could write at that speed.

There is no benefit wrt BLER in writing at anything slower that around 4x or 8x. New media is more sensitive, and slower speeds can be deliterious as the laser power may not be sufficiently throttle-backable.

I find as a rule of thumb that the second slowest speed for a drive seems best. If you get a Plextor Premium CD-RW you can check this yourself, and find the optimum speed for your drive/media.

Try burning at 8x. I use a Plextor Premium burner with Taiyo Yunden media – I burn at 8x with an amazing C1 error rate always around .5. That's about as close to perfect as can be found. BTW, the Plextools Professional software that comes with the premium burners is more than worth the price of the burner (now under $100). I never have to wonder about the condition of my discs or what I'm giving to a client or sending to a manufacturer.

Thank you drbam, for your reply on my question!

By the way; what programm do you recoment for checking de audio-cd before sending it as a master to the manufacturer?
The lowest speed allowed on my burner is 8x.
Is that speed still allowed for Redbook qualifacations?

Greetings,

Jan

I use the Plextools Professional software that I mentioned in my other post. There are some mastering houses that now use this as well. As I said, the software alone is worth the price of the burner.

For Redbook it doesn't matter what your burn speed is as long as your disc comes within the acceptable error rate specs. To achieve this however, you probably will need to burn at around 8x although you might get by with faster speeds (depending on your burner and media). The Plextools software can analyze all of this for you (and more) and you can print out the specs for each disc if you like. This could be handy if there's ever any question about a particular disc. This burner and software is one of the best investments I've made for my studio in the last couple of years and it cost less than $100!

I couldn't agree more about both Plextools and burning speed.
For the audio master CDs that I use I was told to burn at 20x for best results and so far that seems to hold true.
Higher rotational speed = more more stable disk and hence less jitter.
