Burning to DVD-DL disc error

This is my first project after purchasing Vegas 8.1/DVDA 5.0. Everything had gone great until I tried to burn a Blu Ray project to a DVD+R-DL disc. I get the error message that a lot of others have gotten " Could not suggest a valid layer break region because the Smart Prepare data was corrupt or not accessible". when it gets to 66%. It came up no matter if I said to do it automatically or to allow me to select it manually.

I have tried all of the suggestions posted here. I selected recompile the video and it did recompile and dropped my disc usage from 93% to 71%. That made no difference I still get the error message.

Next I tried moving the sections of the video around. The video is made up of 8 parts ranging from 18 minutes 50 seconds, to around 2 minutes. Only one video section is larger than 5 minutes, that is the above mentioned 18+ minute one. I put that one first and all of the others after. That made no difference, I still got the error message.

Then as suggested an another thread, I added 4 chapters to the 18+ minute video, and put 1 chapter in the beginning of the other 7 short video sections. That still made no difference, I get the layer error message.

I then filled out the question form to Sony about the problem, and it was rejected, because my operating system is 64 bit and they said they do not support DVDA if it is on a 64 bit OS.

I am wondering if the error message is from my using the Vista 64 bit version. Is there anyone using Vista 64 bit and able to burn to DVD-DL discs, without getting this error message, using Vegas 8.1 and DVDA 5.0? I wanted to try to find out this before I go any further.

Try a couple of Verbatim DL discs. They solved all my problems and home entertainment players like 'em.

I don't have 64 bit OS so no advice in that area.

SOLVED:
I was informed this issue was resolved in release 5.0a of DVDA. I downloaded and installed it and was able to burn Blu Ray to DVD-DL discs, without any trouble.

Just tried a Verbatim DVD+R DL and while it burned without any errors, the menus would not access the video on the second layer in a Sony DVD player. I allowed DVDA to automatically pick the break.

I have not tried allowing the video to play through to see if it would. The Sony DVD player gave me a "NO DISC" error in when trying to access any of the menus where the video was on the second layer. This player has never had a problem playing production dual-layer discs.

The menus test fine in DVDA, before burning, and they work in CyberLink Power DVD when the project is played from the hard drive, after burning it with DVDA..

I am using DVDA 5.0a.

EDIT: Ok, as an experiment, I tried using Nero to burn the DVD from the hard drive. It burned fine, but still would not play reliably in the player when it hit the second layer. Seems to have too many bit errors.

While the DVD burner is brand new, I am beginning to wonder if it has a problem burning DL media, even though both Nero 9 and DVDA claimed the burns were successful.

Changed out the burner for a Pioneer burner and still have the same problem.

Ok guys, who here really uses DVD+R DL and has no issues with it? What hardware and media are you using?

It does not matter what software I use to burn with (Nero 9 or DVDA), I have yet to make a DL disc that will play to the end. Oh, and burn speed has been set to 2.4x.

Verbatim DVD+R DL
Optiarc (Sony OEM) Burner - $29
DVDA Pro 5 - Author and burn
OS - XP Pro and Vista

No coasters yet - burning 8Mbs at full speed. Plays on Sony DVD-ROM, old Apex player, slightly newer Panasonic combo. There is about a 1/8 sec. breakpoint delay with the Pana, barely noticeable. Also plays on my Sony laptop and a friend's Dell, as well as his set-top player. Menus all work. Burning failed with Memorex blanks.

I too was using 8MBs streams. I am 5 for 5 in the coaster making department.

I guess I will order the Sony burner to see if it will cure my ills.

Thanks.

Pioneer burners are pretty good.

Before you order a new burner, try shutting down background applications. Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and turn off any app you don't need, esp. network activity and agent/monitoring apps. They compete for resources with the burner, but I find your breakpoint issues puzzling nonetheless.

I run a lean machine. 19 processes. I pretty much only allow things to run that are absolutely needed.

The issue does not appear to be break point related. I can jump to the scene via the menus, and I can see the start of the scene, and then the player starts skipping and jumping, as if it is trying to correct the errors, but it finally gives up and aborts.

I tried burning the project without any menus at all and I just did a quick scan forward on the player and when it hit the second layer, the same thing happened.

Burning after a fresh reboot does not matter either.

Two different applications producing the same results on two different burners so far.

I have absolutely no issues buring DVD-R single-sided media.

I just happen to have some projects that are just over 2 hours in length and would like to put them on DL media, rather than manually splitting them across two single-sided disks.

I went ahead and ordered the Sony burner. If this does not do the trick, then I am going to chalk it up to a Sony DVD player that cannot play DVD+R media, which means I have no way of testing the media, so I will be back to using multiple single-sided discs.

Pardon my language, but it really sucks. After all this time you would think the DL media issues would have all been ironed out.

I have gotten it to burn OK on DVD-DL, in Blu Ray format, and I can play it with no play or menu problems, on two different Blu Ray computer Software programs. But, I don't have a Blu Ray Player yet, to try it. Hope Santa will be nice to me.

I haven't yet created a SD video long enough to try it in regular DVD format.

Well, the Sony burner arrives today, so I will know by tonight i that fixes the problems. If not, I might just be a little pissed.

I bought Vegas with the thought of burning DL and eventually Blu-Ray media, but I am slowly regretting that decision, if I am going to be stuck burning single-sided DVD media. If I knew that, I would have just stuck with what I already had.

At least I only bought a 20 disc cakebox of Verbatim DVD+R DL media.
