Never had one go myself but as they're usually connected to external devices it isn't hard to see it happening. I'd try it in another machine though before declaring it deceased. It's possible it uses a voltage that nothing else does on the mobo and part of the power supply has died.

Man, I hope not. That's a new power supply I installed maybe five months ago!

Maybe maybe you've checked this, and it is a reach, have you looked at the system volume settings? I've only seen this once, but it has happened, the lady in the office next to me lost her audio. For some reason, her output was being muted every time she started an application (don't remember what it was).

Thanks, Daryl, I checked that first thing. You're right, though. More often than not, it's usually something simple like that that is causing the problem. Wish that were the case here!

I've had an onboard audio die before, but that's becaue of static buildup & I plugged a plug in. :(

Anyway, what kind of card is it, how do you know the audio isn't working (have you tried different apps), what drivers (the latest AC97 realtek audio drivers sometimes stop playing ALL sound that goes through the software buffer, which is all sound except audio routed though DirectX, which is sometimes buggy!)...

but it could of died. try it in anohter computer, to be sure.

You can always try a thorough Scan disc or system restore, in case it's just an error in your OS.

Is there an on-board audio chip that got reenabled, thus overriding the add-in card? I had that happen one time when I selected "Restore Defaults" in the bios.

Hi Jay. If you plug the card into a different slot does it get detected OK?
