Can I capture PAL footage with NTSC camera?

I have a friend sending me PAL miniDV tapes shot in Europe, and I have a NTSC Canon XL1s. I've been assured that it will capture via firewire fine, and output a 25fps PAL AVI, but I'm skeptical. Will this work?

Sonic, you have both kinds of cameras. Have you tried this?

You will not be able to play back tapes recorded as PAL DV in an NTSC XL-1, or any other NTSC camcorder. There might be some pro-level decks that do this (?)

I know I can't play them back, as in see the footage in the viewfinder or output composite, but I'm wondering if I can capture via firewire. In fact I know that PAL cameras will send NTSC data across 1394, I'm curious if it works the other way around.

I'm skeptical that it works either way, which is to say, I've never seen it done and have my doubts that it could work. I am NOT saying that it is impossible, since there is no technical reason I can think of for it not to work, it's just that I doubt the camera makers have any reason to do make it work. Try it and let us all know :)
