Can no longer use Vegas to import

I've had this problem for over a year now. Previously I could capture just fine but all of a sudden I could not import video via firewire using Vegas. When the problem started all I had was Movie Studio 8 Platinum .. but since have added Pro 8.

BOTH programs show the same problem.

What happens: I loose frames like crazy. It's so bad that I give up after 5 seconds.

WHAT IS WIERD? Is that I've been using Microsoft's Windows Movie Maker to import .. and it has NO problems whatsoever.

That would be OK .. execept that there is no scene dectection and all I can import is one huge file to Vegas. Fortunatly 90 to 95% of what I shoot is a continuous 50 to 60 minute take .. but I recently started a different project and this lack of scene detection is getting to be a real pain.

When I first got this problem I posted this question on the Movie Studio forum with no luck. I thought I'd try here and see what you guys say.

Thanks for any help.

I have never been able to capture from my Canon XH-A1 to vegas in HD mode. Vegas just does not recognise the camera. Yet, if I replay the same tape in our little Canon HV-20 the capture takes place without problems.

This probably does not help you, but just emphasises that capture problems are not unknown.

what are you trying to import? sd / hdv / avchd?

does vegas 'see' your camera, and what camera is it?

Importing SD .. from a consumer Sony camcorder .. I repeat .. this ALL worked previously .. same camera .. same computer.

Evidentially I installed, or changed something and now it will no longer work, but this was a long time ago and I have no idea what (besides it was likely that I didn't try to import for weeks after the change)

The problem is that I drop frames like crazy .. so, yes, Vegas recognizes the camcorder .. it would not get to that point if it didn't.

Have you tried a different firewire cable. We've had a firewire cable appear to work, could get deck control but munged vision. I still don't understand how this can happen but it sure as heck did.

Try running VidCap.exe standalone. I have it with it's own icon on the desktop.

Look for rogue processes using Task Manager.

As I mentioned in the first post ... I can capture now without a problem .. but I have to use Windows Movie Maker .... so why would the same firewire cable not work in Vegas?

WMM capture does not give me scene detection that Vegas does. I end up with one long "clip" that makes it hard to find and edit stuff. I'm afraid that I'll edit somthing out .. and later find I need it.

Yes, I can re-import the whole thing and find it .. but it would be a lot easier just to have it in the clip bin.

I suspect it's a conflict Vegas has with something I installed .. but that's just a guess. Maybe it's an IRQ problem?

Well, I'm not in front of that "problem" computer right now so I can't tyr that. I did find that on this computer (also has Vegas installed) and in the HELP section of VidCap under TROUBLESHOOTING / Dropped frames during capture or playback / Video Capture solutions ... there is this "If you are consistently dropping frames, please try the following software solutions. If none of these suggestions solves your problem, you may have a more fundamental hardware configuration problem that needs to be rectified."

THAT is what I suspect ... a "fundamental hardware configuration problem" (since EVERYTHING used to work perfectly) but where do I look for help with that?

With these kinds of problems don't ignore anything as being suspect, many of the times we've fixed these problems they defy logic. Try another cable. I really doubt that'll fix it but it would no longer surprise me if it did.
Also try VidCap standalone. Heck it coule be a power supply problem that you only see when you have Vegas and VidCap loaded. Same goes for WMM, it can be as simple as different code doing the same thing doesn't provoke the problem.
Sometimes I swear chanting incantations helps.

Just curious. are you capturing to the same drive? Is it possible the drive has gotten into PIO mode?
