I can't say that I've ever seen a play head lock but most other NLE's I've looked at just don't make it quite so easy to move the play head. Few, maybe none, move the playhead when you click in the timeline. You actually have to hit a key to set in/out points and you have to actually hit play or grab the playhead to move it.

I think if this problem was killing me I'd much rather have an option like ctrl+alt+click to place the playhead where I click, or maybe just a mouse chord (left+right click).

Other nice things that help out here are individual lock buttons on the track headers.

We have Tracks; we have Events on Tracks - now my way of thinking is IF I have selected a Track to edit ( kinda no-brainer?), and WHEREVER THE PLAYHEAD is THAT is where I wanna "S"plit - done! But no . . . .

Sorry but Vegas doesn't work that way.
Selecting a track does NOT select the events on the track.
To split only one event you must first select the event to be split.
Which gets us back to where we started from.

Hey! Just 'cos I point it out doesn't mean I didn't know it NOR am I in some way deflecting from your/our requirements. My well meant input was an observation that this is how I would like Vegas to work: Track Event intersect on the Playhead position - period.

Now, and by all means, return to the theme of the thread.

My profound apologies, minor language difficulty (again) on my part, I thought that's what you were saying it did do. I actually tested it carefully just to be certain it didn't work that way, must be the flu I'm suffering from at the moment, yish.

If it could be done then sure gets my vote. But I think your suggestion kind of brings us back to the idea discussed recently of being able to lock tracks.

Bob, as always, no harm done! - You get better, come here and we will offer some TLC . . . . Vitamin C is good.

OK, my suggestion is for Madison to see just WHAT we are attempting to leap about and do. Often they come up with solutions. But this hobbling of my creativity, not being able to trust my mouse/click hand on some delicate frame adjust has pushed me further into Trimmer.

Actually it would also be neat if when one HAS a Track selected and scrubbed with the Cursor each and every Event would light-up as we scrub over, truly SHOWING just what it is we want to edit.

I like your idea, only quibble is when you say "one HAS a track selected". Now try as I might I cannot not have a track selected. Or to cancel me double negative, there's always a track that is selected. Even more confussing is if I have an event selected then I can select tracks without affecting the event selection.

So far of all the apps that use layers or tracks Vegas seems to be the only one that doesn't support locking. But maybe we're missing something, perhaps there's some magic way of making Vegas really fly that none of us have found. If so I wish those in the know would chime in, maybe we need to know some secret handshake.

And thanks for the get well. I struggled along to the Sony HDNA roadshow and in the showbag was a XDCAM beanie and coffee mug, they'd promised a mouse but I love this beanie more.

Every time we make laundry lists of what we want to see in the next version of Vegas I say make practical changes to the basic editor and I get little or no support from the others who are happy with their workarounds.

That is why things like this and that ridiculous credit roll generator, etc. never change. Bells and whistles rule the day and frustrating things like this are ignored due to lack of noise.

If we're talking about changes or additions to Vegas that would solve this problem -- i.e. I have the cursor just where I want it and I want to split just one particular track there -- then the addition of a razor blade tool would be very, very simple and straightforward.

Add a fifth tool at the top of the window, where the normal editing tools are. Get the cursor where you want it, select the razor, click on top of the cursor on the event you want to split, and only that event is split. Got a couple others to split there? Just click them too.

To reduce all possible confusion, the razor would only split a single event -- the event you click on -- whether that event was "selected" or not.

The 'S'plit function is very easy to learn and remember, but it is totally hidden to a beginner. This is a very common question on the VMS forum -- "how do I split a clip into two sections?", etc. A dedicated icon or tool for such a common function would seem appropriate. We used to have an 'S' icon for it -- at least in VMS -- but a tool would be better.

That's how my old "cuts-only" script works. It is a huge timesaver. Like you, it seems obvious to me that the playhead, as it is being called here, should be the focus of the edit, and the editing tools.

Hi,

I found this older thread, which is being very useful to handle the same issues in VEGAS PRO 14, since I was finding cumbersome and even difficult to select an event under the cursor without moving the cursor, and after that to split or delete the event.

Considering all methods discussed in this thread almost 10 years ago, and that during this time VEGAS may have evolved, is there any improved or new method that VEGAS PRO 14 can perform better now? I mean, is there any method for handling the issues discussed in this thread that is worth mentioning since it wasn't available 10 years ago?

Thanks for info!

So far I've found two similar threads, and this is where I stop.

I've been mostly using the right-click and escape method. Another method I use, if I remember to use it, is to click the "selection edit tool" or cycle through the edit modes by pressing D until you get to the selection edit tool), then draw a selection rectangle on the clip you want to select. The playhead won't move -- unless you just click on the event instead of drawing a selection rectangle on it. Press D a couple more times to return to the Normal Edit Mode.
