Can someone identify why my Vegas says "media offline" about my MP4?

Thomas-Stanley wrote on 4/26/2023, 2:31 PM

When I insert my MP4 file into my Vegas timeline, the audio is working, but the video is just black and it says "media offline". I am using version 13 (so a relatively old version). I am starting to think that Vegas simply is unable to support my video for a reason that I am unable to identify.

Here are the details about my MP4 file (I do apologize for the German words, but hopefully it is still understandable. If not, I can try to translate):

Is anyone with more expertise in this area able to identify what the reason could be for Vegas' inability to play this video? Or maybe I am getting it wrong and the problem is not to do with the file, but with Vegas?

Any help is appreciated.

With me that kind of mp4 plays and edit normal in Vegas Pro 13.

The only difference with your file is the framerate. Your file has a very strange framerate (60.08520fps) and mine has 50fps.
I don't know if that is the reason, therefore we need a short sample of your type of file

Assuming the Movie Studio tag for this thread wasn't a mistake...

@Thomas-Stanley Hi, just got to ask, is this in your picture info 32bits pixel format, like in Vegas Preferences or something else?

If that is indeed the case, I don't have to change my answer because with my installation of Movie Studio 13 the same applies as I wrote, only the picture is slightly different

Your screenshot's timeline says the media is offline, where it does not in the Pro screenshot. Why isn't it black? Who knows... Maybe a caching issue.

That "media offline" was because the focus was a moment on Screenpresso in order to make that screenshot.
Going back to Vegas it plays normal, look

@Thomas-Stanley
Again, why your program does not play that mp4 we cannot know with the info you have given.
We need a samplefile to test or give here the MediaInfo of the problemfile following these instuctions; https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

@Former user So, I am actually unsure of whether my Vegas is in 32-bit, because, as you can see on the image below, I don't seem to have that option and I can't find it. However, I have not changed it before, so I think it must be 32-bit. It might be due to my version

@j-v Thanks for the link. The following is the MediaInfo text I got for my file

j-v wrote on 4/27/2023, 9:17 AM

@Thomas-Stanley
Thanks for that MediaInfo.
The reason you cannot play that video is caused by the variable framerate of that MP4 file.
If you use the free app Handbrake or Shutter Encoder to change that variable framerate into a fixed framerate it must be possible to play and edit that MP4 file.

@Thomas-Stanley The top of your MediaInfo is cut off, is this a .MOV? It says format profile - Quicktime? Do you have Quicktime installed on your PC & does Vegas Pro 13 need Quicktime ?

EricLNZ wrote on 4/27/2023, 8:00 PM

@Thomas-Stanley Please clarify which programme you are using as your Project Properties image looks like VMS.

Are you using Vegas Movie Studio 13 or Vegas Pro 13 and what is its Build number?
