can someone test this for me - bluray root menu

L8R wrote on 6/11/2010, 6:37 AM
I am having an issue with DVDA not recognizing the the command of what is usually (root) menu on remote button command. It works with dvd same project in blu -ray has no response when pressing menu, when burned to disc.
The DVDA preview works fine but not when disc is created.

I usually make fully interactive DVD's with the menus allowing you to do what ever I want.
With the blu-rays I've created until now it's been pretty simple, with one file on a static bg.
However,
I tried to make the same style menu with the blu-ray and have encountered an issue.
I have a top menu dividing into 3 sub menus with their own commands and links.

Everything works as it's suppose to, except (root) menu does nothing. I have the project setup that any time I press menu, it should return to the most resent menu. In the DVDA preview everything works as it should.
When I burn the blu-ray disc the menu (root) doesn't work, pressing top menu brings me back to the Top of the 3 sub menus and my client has to watch the whole intro every time, then navigate back to the menu it should have gone to.
So as far as I can tell, the (root) menu command is not working when creating blu-ray.

I've wasted 2 50 gig thermal discs @ $50 a disc on this project because of this.
I've tried even setting it up to return to a specific menu if menu button is pressed and it has the same effect. Allowing the videos to finish... the end command is the same (return to most resent menu) it works as it should. It's the (root menu) button command that isn't working.
The same project for DVD works perfect.

Please help, I need this to work. I have sent a question to tech support as well.

If you will upload or email me the project file from DVD Architect, I will try to look at it tonight. I don't think any of the assets will be necessary.

I'm not exactly sure what's wrong but I do have a tip.

Always burn TEST disks first with re-writables. You'll find it a lot cheaper that way.

QUESTION: Can you test burn a BluRay on a DVD RW? Or is there a BR RW too? - I don't know?

hey guys I started to use my 50 rewritable after this happened twice.
I only have one thermal left and I didn't want to kill that.

I've tried to render this project 3 times since... tweaking different settings. Turning off the top menu button results in no menu return what's so ever.

right now I'm making a screen captured video showing how it works in the preview and what it does playing the actual blu-ray disc.

I've tried playing it in my sony 550 stand alone blu-ray player and in my LG blu-ray burner/reader... same thing happens.

It ignores the (root) menu command forcing me to hit top menu which results in going to the top menu.

John,

How do I upload the project file?
what's your email if necessary?

Just click on my name at the top of my post.

Grazie,
The answer is YES to both.

The caveat is that to burn blu-ray to DVD RW you need make sure that the capacity is not exceeded and that the bitrate is not higher than, I think, 15Mbs.

Well,

Tom was able to duplicate my issue. I am relieved that I am not insane.
What it appears to me is that in the Blu-ray format, there is no (root) menu. Only top menu. Where as if I pop in a DVD with the same project, you have a choice of Top menu or root menu, allowing me to do the structured menu I want.

Now whether Sony will recognize this... that's a different story.
Thanks again Tom, good to talk to you.

Likewise.

Are you sure Blu Ray supports the "root" menu concept? ( I don't know... I haven't checked) I do know that some of the things supported by dvd are NOT supported by Blu Ray... but regardless, they still DO work in DVDa's disk reviewer.

Well Rob,

That is a a good comment. I don't know.
I know that there is the pop up/menu - same button I would use for (root) menu on a DVD.

I guess I was assuming that this button allows you to pop up a store bought discs root menu that it meant I could do the same. It seems simple enough to me to give someone that option.

Maybe it's because it might be some sort of a script or something that's only offered through Bluprint for $50,000.

I loaded your project leaving the media offline as it was unavailable to me. This allowed me to look at the navigation, but not the preview. At first, I thought another pair of eyes would find an error in your navigation but I didn't and, since you have been successful in making a DVD from the project, it appears to be correct even if it ultimately fails to transfer to Blu-ray projects.

I noticed in the preview under DVD Architect that there is no emulation for the various buttons that appear on the standalone BD players such as the Sony BDP-S550 (TOP MENU and POP-UP/MENU) or the Cyberlink Power DVD software player (TOP MENU and FIRST PLAY). Your experience has indicated that a successful preview in DVD Architect Preview is not a reliable indicator of a workable Blu-ray disk. At least one with relatively complex navigation. Perhaps, burning to BD-RE will be the final proof for complex projects.

From reading your experience with Tom, I gather there is still something to be learned about the differences between DVD and Blu-ray menu navigation.

Incidentally, the fact that two people observe the same phenomenon is no indication of "sanity".

Thanks John,

I appreciate your effort in helping me. I am thinking since we haven't seen any changes to DVD architect since 5.0 came out, there are a few areas that they need to improve on.
I just thought it was a give that I would have the same, if not better navigation that you would get with DVD.
Thank you again to all that helped, I love this forum.
I think I'll either have to simplify my DVD menus and keep it on 50 gig blu-ray or split the project onto two 25 gig blu-ray. It's a shame, is a rather nice disc when all together and seeming to work properly.
