Can't burn at 4.0x

I'm unable to burn CD's at 4.0x. I can burn to a CD-RW at 4.0x but the slowest I can burn with a CD-R is 16x. The CD-R's I'm using are TDK GOLD's. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Usually a function of the writer hardware/firmware. Tried updating ?
