Can't even install!

OK, I have two xp machines and have had trouble with them. One wouldn't take my video card, the other does fine. The one that works is brand new and upto date etc.

I borrowed a friends VV install because I wanted to test it before I paid for it, since installing things on XP gives me such a pain.

So I got Architect to install fine. But I cannot get VV to install. All I get is "Vegas 4.0 has unmet requirements" and has Microsoft DirectX 8.1 Runtime in the list on the left. WHen I click on it, it gives me a button for 'more info' but not to install (grayed out).

I have installed directx 9.0b as the more info button directs me to (you cannot install any dirextX 8.x on XP so had to go with 9.0b) Tried others - still nothing.
Tried to install on both computers with the same Error. And installed 9.0b multiple times as a google response suggested, but It won't install and my head hurts.
Computer is a (HP compaq P4 pavillion? (black&silver) DVD burner, GeForce video, etc.

PLease help me! :) thanks.

Have you tried to download the latest version from the Sony site? If not do it and try that.

Ok, I am confused. You are trying to install Vegas Video correct? And you say you get an error saying your system is not ready for it, or something to that effect. If you are posting here than you are on the Sony site. Just look up at the top right of this forum - you will see words that say "Download". Just click on it and you go to the download page > tirals and Demos > Under "Demo's" look for Vegas 4.0 and follow the link to download.

If you already have DX 9b you should have no issues with the new verison of Vegas. If all else fails you can always roll back to the default XP install of DX 8.1 (IF you don't know how to do it you can always get a liitle utility called "Direct X Happy Uninstall". Either way all you need is the orginal XP CD when you roll back. )

HP/Compaq systems come with the entire installation on the hard disk in a separate partition. Sometimes it's hidden, sometimes not. I think the newer systems don't hide it. Also, the system should allow you to make one and only one system software disk or disk set. You should do it now if you haven't yet.

After making the system restore disks you can start thinking about uninstalling some software. You can be fairly sure that there's some extra super duper bonus software in the package that's hosing you.

What model is your presario?
