can't find simple text effect

Please forgive this simple question but I can't find it. I am trying to find how to simply put text over video with no background. I have tried the vv3 help index but some of the time the help index is incomplete or not helpful. I have tried several methods but just can't complete the process.
Thanks for any help.

Click on the text/background tab. Click on text. Drag the default text to the timeline and place it above the clip you want it to appear over----type in the text, play with the font, placement etc.

It's that simple.

You can also Right Click on the video track, select Insert Text Media. Type away.

I should have been more specific, my fault. I have been all of these routes but seem unable to get rid of the background. I want to place text on top video such as displaying someones name underneath them but I can not find a transparent background. Thanks for all the help.

Hi Ron,

Any text you generate in Vegas can have a transparent background. Place the text event in a track above your video.

There is a vertical slider in the properties tab of the text event controls. You might try opening the controls by clicking on the little filmstrip in the corner of the event, and then click on the Properties tab. By dragging the little white triangle next to the vertical box (that has some checkerboard showing) down to make the background transparent.

Example:
Track one, text with checkerboard background= transparent.
Track two, has video you want to put text on top of. (Don't put generated text directly on your video track)
Don't put text below your video track.
To a novice, On top or above can be confused.
I think this is your problem.

Cheers,

The checkerboard is transparent? May the Gods smile on your sole :)
Thank you. ( I wish a bigger book was supplied with this ).
