Can't get Render to look like Preview!

Peter, I was going to suggest adding an additional C.C. for black at the end of the FX chain. But I would first check the range of "blacks" in the FX's chain, looking for clipping done by the encoder or "mode" setting. ;-)

As a sort of postscript to this thread, I've today discovered a similar situation which suggests that this is not just to do with New Blue, but is connected to the way which Vegas, and who knows, other NLEs render.

I've been using Cookie Cutter and Gaussian blur to hide some faces, and I've become quite a dab hand at tracking faces through a clip ... the important thing here is that again, to maximise preview fluency, I've been using Preview/Auto prior to rendering at Best.

With Gaussian blur, there were no problems - the final render looked the same as Preview.

Then for one clip the Client asked me to use Pixelate to disguise a face, and using the Medium Preset, it looked fine. When this clip was rendered at Best, however, the disguise practically disappeared.

So, when a Video FX uses PIXELS and pixel size to achieve its look, then its important to Preview at the same quality as you're going to render, because the end result will be very different if you don't. In my instance, increasing the size of the Pixelation from 0.500 to 0.8561 did the trick.

Dunno if anyone has said anything about this to now, but...

There is a nasty gotcha in Vegas when viewing in one resolution and rendering in another where the effect seems to apply based on size of the preview on your screen, and when you render out higher it's applying to a specific size of pixels. The pixel amount is retained no matter the final output resolution so if it's saying something like 2 pixels, on SD it looks great, then go to HD or 2K and you see a MUCH smaller percentage of the image, however it's still 2 pixels.

So you see, this is a problem, a serious one too, if you're talking about doing something with low preview rez and then pushing it out in the full HD you're going to see some potentially serious variation ( as you're apparently running into ).
