Can't get the "Save Arrangement" feature to work

I finally took the time to download and install the trial version of Vegas5. First thing I note is that, if I move things around a bit and resize the preview window, all my changes are lost when I exit the program. Oh, but wait: that's the new "Save Arrangement" feature. Okay, so I move a few things around, and then hit the CTRL-ALT-D keys, and then hit the 1 key (the keyboard "1" key that shares the exclamation point).

Immediately I get the error message "An error occurred during the current operation, the reason could not be determined." What am I doing wrong? I even went into the keyboard shortcut editor and created a new, simpler key combination--still the error message.

So at this point I'm dead in the water. I'm not very fond of the default configuration (for one thing, the preview window is small) but I can't save any changes I make to the layout. Unless I'm completely missing the point (not the first time) then I guess it's back to Vegas4 for me for the moment.

Richard,

I'm not sure what's going on but if you are talking about the V5 layout (eg. size/position of the different editng windows such as timeline, preview, mixer, explorer, etc), not being saved when you exit V5, that's news to me. I have been using V5 for about a month now and just now tried to save various layout configurations. When I try the Ctrl-Alt-D, release, 1 key combo, my layout is memorized. I saved 4 different layouts using the 1-4 (non-numeric pad) keys. I recall the layouts when I hit the Alt-D, release, 1-4 key. However, I do notice that the only thing that is not memorized is in the timeline window regarding the positioning of the timeline and the controls. Everything else appears to work.

Can't believe that there is a difference between the trial version and purchased version regarding the configuration save set-up but stranger things have happened.

One thing I will try later today is to use a generic PS/2 keyboard. Right now I have a wireless keyboard and I just wonder if there could be any reason why this would have an effect.

I'm also finding that changing the key combinations in the keyboard menu is very erratic, so maybe there's a connection. Incidentally, when I went into the keyboard menu, I first decided to take away ALL the key combinations, so there wouldn't be any possible conflict. I discovered that when I restarted the program all the key combinations were replaced for me. I'm assuming that this is a bug of some sort--Vegas should let me do things my way, and not replace the commands unless I hit the "Default All" button.

Okay, I've now had a chance to use a wired PS/2 keyboard and even a USB keyboard. I've tried htting CTRL-ALT-D keys simultaneously and in different combinations. I even hurled a few well-chosen words at the display. No dice.

I can't imagine what could possibly be different in my XPpro system that could make Vegas5 behave this way. So I guess I'm stuck with V4 for now.

On the positive side, my daughter is getting a horse, so the upgrade money can go towards a bridle and saddle blanket.

haveing a similar problem, wont save layouts for me either, pressing the cntrl/alt/d then number(top row ofcourse) actually changes my cursor type! I have read that it seems to be a problem with usb keyboards but mine is the factory dell ps2.
dont know what the answer is yet. plan on calling tech support, but Ive been kinda waiting awhile so they can get caught up with all the calls from the recent release of V5
