Can't hear audio

I'm using Vegas movie studio platinum. It will capture video from my camcorder with no difficulty, and this captured video plays back perfectly from the capture video screen. However, once the captured video is moved into the editing screen no audio is tranferred. The video is there and runs fine but without any sound, and the audio track tranferred is shown as a series of flat lines.
I have a panasonic camcorder and capture from it using the lead provided.
Any thoughts on how I can resolve this would be much appreciated.

Are you capturing through firewire or through USB?

If you are using the lead that came with the camcorder, you almost certainly are capturing via USB. USB is okay for transferring photos from the camcorder to the PC, and works with some programs (like Windows Movie Maker?), but doesn't work with Vegas/VMS. It ends up creating a Type 1 avi file, while Vegas/VMS require a Type 2 avi file.

Here's a link that discusses the issue:

The audio is actually in the file you captured -- and probably plays okay if you play the clip in Windows Media Player -- but the audio is not in the format that VMS requires.

Look into getting a FireWire cable (FireWire, iLink, and IEE-1394 are all the same thing). You might need to add a FireWire port to your computer as well. If you are connecting to a desktop, you almost certainly need a 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable. If connecting to a laptop, it could be 4-pin to 6-pin or 4-pin to 4-pin. (The camcorder side is always a 4-pin.)
