can't hear the sound

Can anyone help me? I can't get any audio playback on vegas 5 although the meter besides the preview window shows the level of sound, and the video looks fine . The same file will play fine with windows moview maker. I tried selecting "windows classic driver" in the audio device tab. this doesn't help either. i am at a lost. any help will be much appreciated.

What sound card are you using? Is it a multi-channel card that might be porting to the wrong place?
Do you by chance have the audio dimmed at the master source output? CTRL+SHIFT+F12 will undim the audio.
Got any buses assigned that the audio channel might be going to?
What about in Microsoft Sound Mapper?

no, the audio tracks are not muted.

i am using SB Live! the audio is not dimed at the master source output. and the microsoft sound mapper is all set in default.
