Can't Imporrt MP4 files from Mavic 2 Pro

Byron-Smith wrote on 1/11/2021, 5:22 PM

Is there any reason why I cannot import and work with the MP4 files from my Mavic Pro 2 Drone? It is supposed to be dlog H265 10 bit video. I can open this and manipulate it fine in Filmora however in Movie Studio Platinum it does not recognize the file type at all and tells me it is an unsupported file type. Anyone have any ideas what I can do? Starting to regret purchasing the Suite.

It's likely that it's a H265 3480x2160 at maybe 60 fps or some other difficult to support format. Open you Mavic video in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy the text of this report and paste it to this forum.

Once we know the complete specs of your video we'll better be able to help you.

I'm having the same issue with Blackvue dashcam files. I've been told that it was because of the Variable Framerate, which my Blackvue creates. So, in order to use the Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 16, I first have to convert the file (what?!) to a Constant Framerate.

To see the framerate, use MediaInfo app (view-->text)

That makes ZERO sense. The only way I could edit and publish was to use Handbrake to convert to a constant framerate, while maintaining 4k resolution.

It doesn't look the same. I'm looking for a better editor. Vegas Movie Studio is NOT it.

It might be worth paying 99 cents for the HEVC codec from Microsoft and seeing if that makes any difference.

Otherwise, you may have to convert the file with Handbrake to codec Movie Studio can work with.

I also tried the Microsoft $.99 HEVC codecs, did not work; however, your mediainfo shows a "constant" framerate, so your problem is different than mine. I'm wondering if Vegas Movie Studio (all versions) have trouble with the new H.265 / HEVC codecs?

I submitted a real ticket to support. Whatever info I get back, I'll post.

Byron-Smith wrote on 1/13/2021, 8:59 AM

I tried the codec and paid the .99 cents. That worked for Filmora but it didn't work at all for Vegas Movie Studio. I finally bit the bullet and used handbrake. It seems that worked. Please do let me know what you hear back Michael. Appreciate the replies guys.

Only issue I have now is that now I need to figure out the best way to set up handbrake so I don't break the features that are included in the video file. :-(

Here's how to use Handbrake to convert your video to an editable MP4.

Byron-Smith wrote on 1/14/2021, 1:12 PM

Thanks Steve. I just don't understand why I need a free product to convert a video so that I can edit it in a paid product.

My Vegas Pro 17 has no issues with my HEVC 2160p60 10 bit 4:2:0 HLG 200Mb/s footage. This may be a software issue.

Have you tried resetting Vegas to default settings by holding CTRL+SHIFT while double clicking the shortcut to open the problem?

Also, do you guys see this option to enable "Enable legacy HEVC decoding via Intel QSV" in Options > Preference > File I/O Tab: (you may not due to program differences)

Byron-Smith wrote on 1/14/2021, 4:16 PM

Hi Teagan,

Tried both of what you recommended above. Not sure why but still no joy. I have sent a sample file to Magix to see if they can figure it out. If this doesnt work... I will probably ask for a refund.

It's not only Handbrake, also the free product Mediainfo and for Vegaspro, Voukoder is a must....

Dear Michael,

Thank you for your message. Have you tried converting the file into another format or simply the same format through a converter? If not you can try using VLC to convert it.

Byron-Smith wrote on 1/14/2021, 5:58 PM

That is just sad.

Using your Vegas Pro 17, can you try to open this raw, unedited H.265 / HEVC file? I'm still trying to find a good editor without having to convert the files first. Vegas Movie Studio can't do it.

No it could not open it. In the media info of it on my PC I see that the frame rate mode is "variable".

Vegas does not play (as in work - you know what I mean) well with variable frame rate videos. Some versions may, but mine does not.

You would have to transcode the file to a standard, constant, frame rate to import this into Vegas pro 17.

In the future I'd see if your camera supports constant frame rate and not variable. It's EXTREMELY un-conventional to work with variable frame rate video in video editing, at least to my knowledge.

I thought Vegas is a video editor and not a videoplayer.

-- Byron: I'm trying to avoid hijacking your thread, but I think they're related --

Yes, I get the issues between VFR and CFR, but "other" editors work. Regardless, here is some more of Magix support - asking that I try MS17 Trial. Sure, results are attached. Reproducible every time I select the file(s).

You could test to see if the 30 day trial of Movie Studio 17 Platinum imports your dashcam footage: Test VEGAS Creative Software for free

By my knowledge, also smartphones record with VFR, so it's not that unconventional. As there are probably more people recording videos with smartphones than with camcorders, it would be nice if VMS would be able to edit such videos without the need for third-party convertors.

Cue the Jeopardy theme song. Still waiting after sending them my msinfo32 data. All of it. I'm disappointed with Magix support. Horrible.

I couldn't wait anymore. I last use Vegas products when it was Don't and it was great but this one needs some work especially for the price point. I requested a refund and uninstalled everything. Thanks for the feedback and the suggestions all.
