can't merge clips in timeline

I just bought Screenblas moviestudio 3 because my new VAIO can't burn DVDs form the XP MovieMaker that came with it. I find 3 very awkard to use, and help documentation deficient. Right now, if I try to move a media clip into the time line, it overlaps the existing events there. How do you do it?? I also, I tried opening an existing avi movie to edit, but when I try to open a section to add clips, a second copy of the media on the time line starts to overlap itself, and sound can't be coupled to move. I was trying to paste in some decent title animation from XP MM, since, 3 has such a pitiful selection.

Drag your clip to the timeline, then put the curser over the clip, hold down the left button, and drag your clip down and place it where you want it.

On the clips that are overlapping, drag them to the end of your other clips. From there you can butt them right next to each. If you let them overlap a little you will see the blue 'X', that is your dissolve transition.

Does that make sense?

I still don't see how this works. Let's say I have three clips I've added to the time line adjacent to one another. Now I want to add a fourth at the beginning. It will overlap the first clip. If I move the first clip to the right to make room, it overlaps the second clip, etc. It seems there should be a way to add a clip and let it do a paste insert, such as you can do with a clip already on the time line. Other movie edit programs (windows movie maker and VideoWave) have this convenient feature. Anyway, how would you do it giving the situation I've stated?

There is an Insert Time command under the Insert menu. You can position the cursor where you want the new clip to go, insert at least enough time to make room for the clip, place the clip in this new empty gap, and then if there's any space left over you can doubleclick in that empty space and press the Delete key to remove it.

Vegas has a nice auto-ripple feature that takes care of all this for you. This feature doesn't exist in VideoFactory 2, but i seem to recall hearing a wild unsubstantiated rumor that it might be in Movie Studio 3. Look in the help file for "ripple" and see if it's there.

If you put an event into the clipboard you can do a Paste Insert which, if you have Ripple mode on, moves everything to the right of the cursor over.
The best way I have found (so far) to move an event to the clipboard is to take an item from the media pool and move it to an unused track (overlay for instance) select it, then copy it - then do the Paste Insert (edit pull down). You can then delete the event from the overlay track.
There is probably a better way to do it but this seems to work - I'm pretty new at MS3.

I have a ripple option, but it only works on clips saved to the clipboard which can only be done from the time line, not from the media pool. The whole routine of making a space, then moving the clip hopefully shorter than the space, and then eliminating the space is really awkward. The other method suggested of moving the clip to another time line, then cut and paste insert works is OK if there's no audio. The audio overlaps the existing audio, and stays there, not moving with the video clip. I'm beginning to think I bought a poorly designed product. I don't know what the folks at PC magazine were smoking when they recommended this product.

If the event you place on the clipboard has audio you need to group them (video and audio) before you copy to the clipboard, then when you do the paste insert it moves the video and audio over and insert both from clipboard.
It could be a little easier - but every application has it's quirks - you have to decide what you like and base your opinion on that. That particular problem/feature doesn't bother me but it might bother you. I find lots of other things about MS3 that are far superior to other applications like Pinnacle Studio 8 that for me, make it worth dealing with a bit higher learning curve. Like other's have said - "Your mileage may vary"

The audio and video would normally be grouped by default - if they're moving independently you may have "Ignore event grouping" switched off.

Hey - let me clarify -- The "paste insert" option is blanked out for moving clips from the media pool to the timeline. It only becomes available for items on the clipboard, and there is no way to put items in the media pool directly into the clipboard. As far as sound an video separation, that was in response to Walleye's suggestion to fist move the clip to another timeline bar, then do a paste insert. When moving the video clip to another timeline bar, the audio overlaps existing audio, and does not stay connected to that video clip.

Re Cguebwirjs 11/16 reply - Screenblast 3 and 3a have a ripple mode, but it doesn't work as shown in the on line help.

Although I,m a new convert to MS3 from Studio 8 I think there is an easier answer here. Just right click on the clip that you want to move and choose "Select to end" ( or something like that) then holding your left button down, drag to the right and everything will move together, opening a space on the left.
