Can't Monitor When Recording

I tried searching thru old forum topics on this but I see conflicting answers (also tried emailing SF but Netscape freezes when I click the email support button for SF).

What's happening is I recorded a rhthym track in Vegas (the Lite version) and now I want to record a 2nd track while listening to the first. I can't hear the recording track (tho' I do see the meter rising and when I'm finished the audio is there). Can you monitor when you record on Vegas or not?

I'd swear I've monitored before on Vegas. But I can't remember if it was on a friend's Vegas Pro or not. I remember I was transferring my old 4 track recordings to the hard drive and didn't really need to monitor since I was just hitting record and walking away. But I knew to come back from doing the dishes because I heard the end of that track coming thru my computer speakers.

Was I recording in a fugue state, or what? Temporarily transported to Mars? Does Vegas monitor or not?

Oh yeah, I'm just using an old Soundblaster on my Athlon AMD (still waiting for my tax return).

Thanks,
Terry

Please refference the knowledge base article 1065. Here is the link. http://www.sonicfoundry.com/support/SupportProduct.asp?FamilyID=30&Family=Vegas&TopicID=43&DetailID=187

Well this is weird. It looks to me like that site says you can't monitor when recording. But after I posted this problem I got an idea and went to the Creative menu and ran diagnostics on the soundcard. Then I went back into Vegas (and Acid 3.0) and for some inexplicable reason was able to record while monitoring the signal.

Now I'm happy but even more confused. One: I don't know why running a diagnostic test should change anything (and I swear I didn't change the record or playback properties). Two: I thought (according to the above site posted) that you were only supposed to be able to monitor from an external device.

What the dickens is happening?

I'm using Vegas LE also and mine monitors just fine. I think it is your hardware or settings. You need to record enable the track you want to hear so you have input. Also in the options it a check box "monitor while recording" which should be checked (by default). Do you have other music apps that work right? if so you know it is a setting with your software app and not your soundcard. Also, make sure you are running your card "full duplex". Hope some of this helps.

Hmm, what means this "full duplex"?

And actually, I was having that problem for ALL my apps (SF, Vegas, Acid 3.0). So...hmm, duplex, eh? How would one change such a thing?
