Can't "Move" large .avi files to an external

I'm starting to beat my head against the wall--this seems way too simple, but it's not working:

I do my video editing on an AMD dual core/4gigRAM/10K HDs. I have a couple of large .avi files, 7gig and 15 gig, respectively, that I would like to move to an external 7200 HD.

Actually, I have two 7200 rpm external HDs, one a 120 gig HD with about 50 gig free space (USB 2.0 connectivity) and the other, a new 500 gig HD with 465 gig of free space (USB 2.0 and firewire connectivity).

When I move, copy, or send .avi or mpeg files of 2 to 3 gig size, there is no problem whatsoever. It takes a couple of minutes but these "move" to the external HDs without problem.

When I tried to move either the 15 gig or the 7 gig .avi's to either external HD I get a message that there is "insufficient space" with a set of options for erasing files to make more room. Something is wrong, since I tried to move the 15 gig file to the 500 gig ext. HD when it didn't have anything else on it--still got the same message.

Two questions:

(1) Any way to solve the main problem here--the inability to move large files to an ext HD?

(2) If no easy solution, is there any way to break up the existing .avi files into 2 or 3 gig chunks without re-rendering them.

Sorry if these seem like dumb questions...actually, I hope they are dumb questions, with painfully obvious answers to someone here...

Sounds like your externals are formatted FAT32 insstead of NTFS.
Take a look at the recent unable to copy large files to external drive thread for solutions.

I'm with Mike.
Just had the same problem solved here.
I just did reformatted my Lacie external FAT32 to NTFS and jsut transferred an 8 GB QT file.
