Can't play NTSC DV rendered AVIs in Media Player

Merry Christmas!

I am trying to determine why I can not play the AVI files using version 9 of Media Player which were captured from my Camcorder (GL1) .

I downloaded a program tonight called GSpot (yes, that's actually the name) that is "a Codec information appliance" in order to test my AVI files. One of the messages GSpot gives me is " This is an invalid AVI file due to corruption of the data in the header. This is a serious problem, and this file is not likely to be playable. Details: While processing chunk /RIFF:AVI , found bad length value 1073521156 at file offset 0x000107f8".

Using the video test section of the program I get the following message (which is basically the same message Media Player gives me): "DirectShow was unable to render the file. Following is the error it reported: 0x80040241: VFW_E_CANNOT_LOAD_SOURCE_FILTER - The source filter for this file could not be loaded."

However, this same program also says that there are four compatible Codecs on my computer and gives me this message: "
The following codecs all claim to be capable of processing this format:

--> {MainConcept DV Codec 2.0.4}
--> {DV Video Decoder}
--> {Ligos DVSD Video Decoder}
{AVI Draw}

To get more information by having GSpot instruct the O/S to "play" the file and then examine the results, press the button labeled "Render"."

Here's the wierd part: I can open, edit, and render the AVI files in Vegas 4. I can also create a DVD in DVD Architect from either a Vegas rendered AVI or MPEG2 file. But I can not play a Vegas rendered AVI file using Media Player. MPEG files play OK.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Media Player more than once. Also, I can play the AVI files using Quicktime 6.3 although the quality is not very good. I can also open and play the files in Acid 4.

I am obviously open for suggestions on how to play my AVIs using Media Player.

Thank you and may you have a blessed New Year!

Try downloading and installing the latest version of DirectX, think that might be the prob. Seems like I had some problem with DirectShow, seems like its was a DirectX thing ... worth a try. Lemme know if that does the trick.

Ray,

I went to the URL you gave and installed the latest version of DirectX. It rebooted the computer but I still have the same problem and get the same error messages.

Thanks for trying.

Happy New Year!

I would do a repair install or reinstall of Vegas at this point. Have you loaded any other DV-related tools since installing Vegas? Either that, or update your media player. It's possible something in a dll file has become corrupted. Are you using the base template, or have you modified it? This could potentially create a problem as well. Shouldn't, but heck, it's digital. Sometimes weird just happens.

Well I did a buncha digging, all I could find out is that it is indeed an error:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/directx9_c/directx/htm/errorandsuccesscodes.asp

Outside of that no real solutions but I did manage to confuse myself quite well. I guess try Spot's suggestions and cross your fingers, if you do figure it out please post.

Questions:

1) Did you capture with the Vegas capture tool?

2) Did you render this in Vegas?

If yes to 1 & 2...

Load the file in Mediaplayer, go to file> properties...what video codec is listed? Mine (XP, totally stock, says "DV Video Decoder".)

Answers:

1. Yes

2. Yes

The AVI will not load in Media Player. I get an error message, "The source filter for this file could not be loaded." with the details further stating, "0x80040241: Windows Media Player does not support this file type
The file you are attempting to play may not be supported by Windows Media Player. The following table lists the file types (formats) supported by Windows Media Player."

I can open VirtualDub and load the AVI. When I look at the file information given within that program it says that the decompressor is MainConcept DV Codec 2.0.4.

When you say "base template" what software and what template are you asking about? Also, I have installed other DV related applications since installing Vegas 4/DVD Architect..
