can't play Vegas rendered AVI with WMP9

I rendered an AVI file with Vegas 4.0 using source video captured with a Sony TRV900 miniDV video camera. The AVI file plays fine using Vegas. However, when using Windows Media Player the video doesn't display while the audio plays.

WMP9's error message says, "The dvsd codec is required to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help." Unfortunately, the website doesn't have any links to a dvsd codec.

I've also tried www.fourcc.org and they list both dvsd and DVSD. The dvsd seems to point to a Pinnacle Systems codec, but requires the presence of a specific Firewire card (which I don't have). The DVSD points to the MainConcept DV codec, which is $49.

Is there any other source for this dvsd codec?

I have the same problem at work when playing Matrox captured/rendered DV/DVCPro AVI's. I gotta use the Matrox player. Annoying.

What kind of AVI are you rendering out? the NTSC/PAL Defaul format?

Open Windows Media Player.
Click on "Tools"
Selection "Options"
Click on "File Types" tab
Check box for "Windows video file (avi)

That should fix it.

TheHappyFriar -

I'm rendering NTSC.

VideoCurmudgeon-

By checking "Windows video file (avi)" in the Options/Files Type pref, all I'm doing is setting the file association. If I don't have the correct codec, it won't make any difference.

I solved this problem by installing the latest DirectX 9.
