Can't record analog audio

Want to digitize a cassette to the timeline. Hooked cassette player to Line In on the built in Realtek 97 stereo mini input on motherboard. Can hear it well though the computer's audio--coming out the same speakers Vegas plays through--but after arming a track, meter does not move and I do not get audio.

What do I have to do to record analog audio through the Line In on the computer?

Do I need a dedicated audio card?

Did you change the record source to be line-in? Try this...

Bring up your volume control (speaker icon in your windows system tray). Chhose 'options', 'properties', 'recording'. Now check the 'line-in' box. It is probably set to microphone or something else.

When you arm the track and play the tape now, you should see the meters move.

Hope this helps.

Mr. Grand,
You are indeed a gentleman, scholar, a prince among men and most likely an excellent judge of horseflesh as well.

As usual, it's the obvious stuff that trips me up. You are correct. A simple checkbox, buried in Microsoftian depth several dialog boxes away, changed from mic to line did the trick.

I right clicked on the "Sound Effect" icon in the system tray then selected the "Sound Recorder" app, then, under "Edit" the "Audio Properties," then under "Sounding Recording" there's the "Volume" button and inside that were three options: CD, Line In and Mic with little "select" check boxes. Sure enough, the "mic" was checked. I selected "line in" and all is well with Vegas.

Thanks.
