Can't render mpeg on Win2000

When trying to render an .avi file to mpeg the system
abruptly reboots. It will be in the middle or towards the
end of a 2 minute render and the system will either reboot
or create and error with reference to the vidfac.exe. I
have uninstalled and reinstalled a couple times. System
consists of a 1 GHZ Athlon cpu, 1/2 gig of memory, Asus
3800 video card, IDE RAID 1 (two 30 gig ultra dma 66
drives) Soundblaster platinum 5.1 sound. I have also tried
pre-rendering and the same thing happens. HELP!!

A couple additional notes, I have tried in .wma format and
the same thing happens. Either I get a blue screen or the
the screen turns black and reboots. This is a custom box
and I have not had other problems with any other apps.

The problem is quite likely related to the use of MPEG as
source material. No matter what anyone tells you, it is a
less-than-ideal format for source media, and we do not
encourage its use on the timeline.

If possible, capture to a different format, make your
edits, and then output to MPEG or whatever you wish. MPEG
is a great destination format.
