Can't Use My MPEG files

I just got a new compueter and brought all my old files in from the old one. Now, it seems I can't use them on Video Factory since I've loaded it. The files play fine on Windows Media Player and all, but Video Factory won't let me use them at all.

I'm sure there's some simple solution that I'm just tooo dumb to realize, so if anyone culd open my eyes, I could finish my project I started on my previous computer.

You need to re-register the MPEG plug-in. Create a new project, put something short and simple on the timeline, then MakeMovie on your disk, file type .mpg. This will pop open a registration dialog box so that you can register it. After that you should be able to open MPEG files again.

If it’s what I had, I just went through this last week. I upgraded from WinMe to WinXP Home and VideoFactory could no longer recognize any AVI or WAV files! The problem was that I didn’t delete the Sonic Foundry Common folder, which has all the shared plugins. I just reinstalled over the old directories. Apparently this common directory keeps a reference to the plugins in the Windows registry. When you upgrade Windows, the registry changes and these plugin references point to the wrong place. I kept getting an error that AVI was an unknown file format in VF.

All I had to do was delete all the Sonic Foundry directories and reinstall all the applications fresh and everything worked again. This may be the same problem. (or it may just be the MPG registration issue as Chienworks pointed out.) ;-)

I finally rebuilt my machine again today but this time I formatted the harddrive before installing WinXP. I’m having some lockup problems and I’m hoping this will fix it.
