Can't view AVI video

jmtaylor wrote on 4/10/2010, 3:46 PM
I have used avi before in Vegas 6, but cdn't get video to display on this one, tho audio is fine. Asked my 2 IT guys at work, they sd it was the codecs & gave me some to use. Didn't work, so upgraded to 9b. Still didn't work so googled the problem. Seem to be a lot of people have had this but none of the solutions offered elsewhere have worked. Any suggestions?

Help us out a bit here --- what camera shot this AVI ? .. It's likely a highly compressed file that does need the right codec to decode in Vegas.

Google K-lite and try that codec.

Google "Super software" and try to use Super (it's free) to convert this file to a standard AVI.

Find the right codec --- or convert the file to something else.

Did you try using the free GSpot software to identify the codec used to create the file?

In any case your IT guys were right that it's a codec issue, even if they didn't solve your problem. I suspect they weren't trying too hard since the usual point of view of an "IT" guy is that *you* are creating problems for *them* and the solution is to take your toys away.

AVI can have a lot of different things inside of it. So can quicktime. So can MXF. If Vegas is playing the audio in a file but not showing a picture then there's a 100% chance that Vegas doesn't have a codec available to it to play your media. You either need to find a usable codec, or you need a secondary application to transcode your media into something Vegas can use.

As CClub says, GSpot can usually tell you something about the contents of the AVI. Sometimes a program like Super can transcode it (although I hesitate to recommend Super because it constantly sets off virus scanners). Super mostly uses FFMPEG so it's not really doing anything that you couldn't find elsewhere, but I'm at a loss as to what else to recommend.

To reiterate what has already been said, there are more flavors of AVI than Baskin-Robbins.

Use GSpot or MediaInfo to provide your file information, which camera model you used, and you will get a response.

In the meantime, there is my little tutorial here, which is pretty good spare-time reading.

Not sure if this is your issue, but I had an trouble with some Canon videos and found the product shown below a few years ago. For me, it turns them into something that Vegas 8 can use.

MP4Cam2AVI Easy Converter

Hope it works for you.

Thanks, guys! Tried GSpot; sd my codecs were fine but gave me an error Bad chunk in frame data: Invalid length. Googled that, found a free program VirtualDub that fixed it. Really appreciate your help, wdn't have found fix wo your help!

Funny thing is that both VirtualDub and Vegas use VFW instead of Directshow. Usually any format that will play back in VirtualDub will also work in Vegas. It is unusual to see something that will play back in one but not the other.

For what it's worth, do not EVER install the K-Lite codec pack on a machine used for production, it will break things and is virtually impossible to remove completely.
