I have read several posts regarding this $39 software and am considering buying it. I alternate now between VidCap 3.0 and 4.0 (sometimes one seems to work better than the other).
I just bought it. The rapid tape indexing incredible.
I get to be able to scrub all clips, print off sheets of grabs and generally "proof" my work prior to capture. For me, this will provide a further way into the narrative of the "Soft Corp" I do.
I'm still learning and experimenting with it, but in my experience thus far it does have a really tough and secure feel to it. The batch capturing procedure is rapid and makes for a workmanlike experience.
been using it for quite a while now - f--king fantastic. oh how i wish i'd had it back......
anyway, my workflow (which varies quite a lot) is generally something like:
capture clips / dump ng's / trim to 2" heads and tails on takes that need it / print web based index / send copy to client (the intelligent ones - all too few of them unfortuantely).
armed with script, paper cut (litterally) index pictures to dialogie or whatever.
fine cut and add whatever needed / render (overnight if necessary) / vhs time code copy to client for approval (i'm not going to waste time rendering an mpeg if theres to be changes, or give him (it's usually a him) the chance to use the copy to delay payment. i wont give a clean copy till i'm paid.
collect cheque.
think the other thread re vegas future is a bit of a laugh after the speed and simplicity of all this....
"5. SA doesn't capture HDV. ..(you don't get any scene detection from the stupid HDV capture option in Vegas).... "
This answered two questions I had. Since I started using my HD camera a couple months ago I looked everywhere for the option to turn on scene detection. Now I know it's not me. What a royal pain. I shoot track events and usually pick up a half hour of footage and just dump to the hard drive. It never fails that right in the middle of a race, Vegas capture decides it needs to start saving to a new file. Why does it do this? File size limits?
Apparently Scenalyser only will do an index of a DV tape, but not an analog (VHS or Hi8) tape. Is that right? Is there any way to get it to do the fast index on a VHS tape (via ADVC-100)?

There is no timecode on VHS tape (at least not normally) so such a thing is not possible. Also, unless you have a $3,000 VHS deck, you probably don't have computer control over the deck, which would be required as well.
