Can Vegas Video do this???

Hello,..here is a feature that I need and would like from a NLE program. Being anewbie to Vegas 3 can someone please tell me if I missed this in the trial run over the weekend...Not sure what the techie term is for what I'm about to describe,..but I will nevertheless attempt to describe it....

I have a video clip in the timeline (or event as VV likes to call it)

I want to use the light flare effect.
I drag the effect over and whammo the editor opens up for that effect. Great so far!
NOW,...I want the flare effect to only cover a tiny portion of the center of the screen and not anywhere else. Silly, I know,..but I'm trying to explain what I'm looking for.

I know I can move the flare around and fade in and out with keyframes,...but can one actually reshape it or restrict the flare to only extend to a boundary and stop right at that boundary?

Better yet, say a green tint, Can I get the green tint to only appear in the person's left eye while leaving the entire remaining frame in black/white?

What is this feature called and can VV3 do this, or is this for the heavyweight programs like Avid Xpress or maybe a post type program like Commotion or After Effects. Just curious. I think VV3 is a very nice program otherwise.

If indeed this is only done in an After Effects,....wouldn't this be self defeating? I mean would this mean that I would have to create the video in VV3 or any NLE for that matter, export the video to MPEG 1, 2, or whatever format and then after editing in After Effects I would have to re-compress??? This would comprimise the quality wouldn't it??? Double compression???

Another consideration is how much your subject is moving...

It can be a challenge to do "motion-tracking" in an NLE as opposed to using a compositing application like Combustion or doing frame by frame rotoscoping. It can be done with keyframes (sometimes), if the motion is not too complex.

That said, it is not uncommon to take elements that need processing out to another application. It is uncommon to find an app like Vegas that can do so much so easily.

On the subject of "events", Vegas (SoFo) means something quite specific... It is a aspect of what makes Vegas quite different from other apps. You might consider the "event" as boundaries on the timeline that serve as a "window" on any type of media, or any number of media (takes).

GG,MPH,

Thanks. Yeah, I hope that my "events" reference didn't sound sarcastic. I'm still learning here. I now see that the term "event" is indeed specific to a principle unique to Sonic Foundry. I have always been fearful and quite uneasy when it came to creating/using masks, but I think I'm ready to dive in.

Greenland, if you were going to do post processing in some other program, then you wouldn't render to MPEG from Vegas to go to that program. You'd probably render to uncompressed AVI or at least DV if that other program accepted it. You would save the compression step to be done once and last.
