can you define/mask highlight/mid/shadows like in Colorfast?

Hi all

that's one brilliant feature in NB Colorfast, the abiity to exactly define the areas where your highlights stops and your midtones or shadows start, and define some sort of feathering or spread as well.
Can you do that in the V20 color grading FX? Might have overlooked it if yes, but if you can, could someone point me to it?

Thanks!

Not exactly. The color wheels and relative color wheels do let you control the range but not as precisely as a Colorfast or Color Corrector Secondary mask. The selective hue control is pretty good at isolating colors and the slope of the curve between points is essentially feathering.

To my knowledge, the closest to NBFX's CF2 in VP20's CGP is:

For me, each have their advantages and disadvantages, the main difference is that CF2 has keyframing. With highlighting in CF2 - as good as it is - its biggest downfall is that it only has 4 mask node points (if not using a luminance etc mask). For some tasks that require more involved defined masking, Vegas Pro's long existing Color Correction (Secondary) can be a better approach - again if not using a luminance or other selection.

To explain that, if using a luminance masking selection in CF2, that selection affects all areas of the image. If I want to address only, say, the sky then the luminance selection may also affect other areas of the image that don't need to be adjusted. Hence the use of CF2's node masking - but disappointingly only 4 node points are available.

Want more control? Add another CF2 😉.

What is Colorfast?

RogerS wrote on 4/3/2023, 1:44 AM

NewBlue Colorfast is an Fx package that is often bundled with VEGAS (came with mine, not sure which version) and enable precise changes of hue/ saturation of individual colors with masks. It's an intuitive interface.

In the RL colorwheels, this can be done with the limits, as shown by Dexcon. However, my impression is that this is more for HDR footage.
