Simple solution, render out to AVI and use TMPGEnc to encode, for mpeg-1 I think it's still free and in my humble opinion does a much better job of mpeg-1 than the MC encoder, well certainly on poor footage.

Do a search on this topic. You'll discover a registry entry that needs to be deleted and it will then work after that. To help in the search, try these keywords:

HKEY Custom Mainconcept

Vegas definitely isn't optimized as the world's most awesome MPG1 encoding tool...or rather, Main Concept isn't. Their focus is clearly on MPG2

This is the reply to my post on SoCalVegasUser group (Yahoo). I had the same problem with V4

... This is a known issue. You have a registry key that is preventing the custom
button from working.

Look in your registry, and make sure it only has these entries, and nothing
else. I do remember that one additional entry has to be deleted. Back up the
branch (export) before you delete, so you can restore if things mess up.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sony\MC MPEG Plug-In\1.0\License]
"CurrentKey"="XX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX"
"InstFlags"=dword:00000010

(you shoud see letters and digits instead of the X's here...)

It works
