Cannot deselect time line drag?

I am having a lot of trouble deselcting the time line drag. By this i mean draging the cursor above the time line (two yellow triangles)to highlight a section of video , audio etc. I think I may have toggled a command on my keyboard perhaps that affects the shift key? I think this may be the case because when I go to mark (M key) a section of video the comand appears NTSC , PAL etc which is a 'shift m' command.. I may be way off with this diagnosis but some very strange things are happening.I cannot get to a point in the timeline without selecting a whole segment of vid. How on earth do I turn this command off?
Please help!!

I'm not sure I understand your problem but I'll try. Above the timeline in the tool bar there is an icon that looks like an "I" with a red tack going through it. It is the Normal edit tool. If it isn't selected click on it to see if that solves your problem. It is also in the Edit menu/Editing tools. Leaving the gray bar on the drag bar shouldn't cause a problem; itt will change withe any new selection.
Hope this helps.

This bugged me today and I think what you have done has nothing to do with the drag bar. I think you have accidently caused a Group. This is done by selecting a number of clips on the timeline then press the g key. To ungroup the clips click on any one of them then press the u key to ungroup them. See if this helps.
