Cannot find vids:dvsd Decompressor

Hi Guys,

I always capture my DV video using the deault Capture utility via firewire.

I am sure that I used to be able to preview the resulting avi files using Windows Media Player.

But now when I try I get an error message that the required codec is not available.

Using another preview utility, I get the message: "Cannot find vids:dvsd decompressor.

Where can I get this missing codec from?

It is part of the standard Windows installation. I don't have Windows 7 though.
Did you by chance install some kind of codec pack?

Hmmm, no, I didn't install any seperate codecs..

I think someone had suggested reinstalling Windows Media Player, but I cannnot see any way to do that on Windows 7 as it is not in the uninstall program list, nor can it be downloaded seperately..

Just to be clear:

You are capturing MiniDV over a Firewire connection using Vegas MS as your capture program, right?

If so, the capture program is not changing the video files in any way, other than breaking it into short AVIs. The program does not add or change the compression in any way. It comes from the camcorder in DV format -- the most standardized consumer video format in the world, and a codec included on every PC that has Quicktime installed on it.

Do you have the latest version of Quicktime installed?

I'm pretty sure dvsd is the fourcc for the DV AVI codec, not Quicktime.

It would install with DirectX, not WMP, so the easiest way to restore it would be by reinstalling Windows.

Steve, yes, I am just doing that, like I have been doing for tha past several years. Firewire from the DV camera to the PC, then it gets split into clips.

Windows explorer shows the correct Icons (frames) for the clips. Windows media player will sometimes play a clip, sometimes it gives up part way through, other times will not play it at all.

The message I get is that "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file".

I can play the clips ok using the VLC Media player.

However, I have so much stuff installed on my PC that the thought of reinstalling Windows is really not an option.

I fixed the problem...

Apparently Microsoft have marked the dvsd codec outdated, and so it is not included with Windows 7.

However, I found a copy at free-codecs.com, this is the Pinnacle version (sorry guys), I installed it and now all is well, at least it works with the Preview indexing program that I wrote a while back - but still does not allow Windows Media Player to play the clips..
