Does anyone know if it is possible to preview on a television monitor (through firewire) using the Canon GL2.

I dont see why not--most cameras at that price and quality point offer pass-thru---

I have a GL2, and while I don't use it as an editing deck, I know that it does support pass-thru...

I have the XM2 (the European PAL version). If you are envisaging a setup whereby the computer connects to the camera via IEEE1394 and the camera connects to the TV via S-Video and audio jacks, the answer is Yes. The 'switch' to turn on the pass-through function is buried in one of the menus.
