Canon GL2 Used? Where to find?

p@mast3rs wrote on 4/7/2004, 1:05 PM
I have been looking all over the net for a good conditioned, used, but fairly cheap GL2 or Sony - DCR-VX2100. I saw the GL2 on 5starelectronics for $1499 but I was hoping to pick one up cheaper than that.

Anyone know any good sites where users sell their gear and not some dealer site? More importantly, a site that delivers COD so I can avoid getting a DOA camera again.

Thanks

I highly doubt that you will be able to find a used GL2 in good condition for under $1500, even on e-bay they are going for around $1800-$2000

Its worth a shot.5star has them for $1499 brand new in box with Us warranty. The Sony they have is $1799.

Theres gotta be someplace or someone willing to unload one somewhere :) At least I hope.

Yeah I saw that. Im gonna try to avoid them at all costs unless they actually have one in stock but judging from the site, they never have anything in stock.

acidsex,

good choice... the GL2 is a gem of a little camera. the lens is high-quality, the ccds are very sharp, the manual controls are excellent, and the extra features like time-lapse exposure are really very nice extras. the ergonomics are also terrific.

i owned a GL1, used several GL2s, and have a friend with an XL1s. all of these cameras are really fantastic.

in fact, you might want to search for a used GL1... perhaps it might be possible to find one of those in your price range.

otherwise, if you can wait a while... rumor has it cannon is going to release a successor to the GL2 and XL1s at NAB, so prices on GL2s may be ready to drop.

Hey acidsex,

I have a GL2 that is a year old and in perfect condition that I would like to sell. I picked up a PD170 this year. It has all the accessories and a Power 2000 BP-930 battery. If you're interested drop me a line at:

Hey, I have a Canon XL1 used Spring 1999 - October 2001. c/w both lenses (18X and 3X WA), XLR adapter, Battery belt adapter, dozen or more Tiffen 72mm filters (SoftFX, 812, Fogs, Polarizer, ND3/6/9) Portabrace case, Portabrace Rain Slicker, Seal Skin Winter coat -- make me an offer psburn@shaw.ca. It is going on eBay and the dealer's consignment site shortly but I am open to offers from forum members. The reasons I am selling it is we cannot sell XL1 footage to the News channels and can't match XL1 to DSR 500WS. That camera hasn't recorded an inch of tape since October 2001 when it was used to supplement the DSR 500. Result was great A-Roll from the 500 and marginal (comparitively speaking) B-Roll from the Canon. I am not going to tell you it is a great camera because it isn't. However, if you are not worried about selling footage to Broadcasters I guess it is okay. I'll throw in an ECM -44 as well!

Yet another reason the Vegas forum should have a Classifieds section like the Cow Forums do!

............we cannot sell XL1 footage to the News channels

You must have an unusual news channel,,, I thought they would air footage shot on anything.

We regularly use XL1 footage for broadcast.

Up in Canada Craig Broadcasting and Global TV are not fond of XL1(read "miniDV") stuff. CBC will take DSR 500 DVCAM as minimum standard for News Magzine shows such as Street Cents; they prefer BetaSX. CTV affiliates shoot with DSR370s or D35/DSR1 so no problems there. Wouldn't say they are unusual news channels, just a bit more particular than their US counterparts I guess.

Another factor up here is many worthwhile clients (those willing to pay market rate of $1,100+/day for a shooter and basic package) realize there is a big quality difference between minDV Canon XL1/GL2/VX2000 and PRO DSR 500 DVCAM or D50/DSR1. There are so many wannabes fighting for ever diminshing pieces of pie that most bid submissions must contain detailed equipment specs and staff CVs. So good luck trying to get Oil Company work with an XL1 in northern AB, no matter how much you try to undercut us on price. This is why my Canon XL1 is for sale, old son.

aint your son nor am I old , seems to me you are still shooting DV
bakerbud9 wrote on 4/9/2004, 3:46 PM
what is so increddibly humorous about companies that consider DVCAM acceptable "pro" format vs. Mini-DV as "amateur" is that both tape formats are exactly the same mathematical format. there is absolutely no difference in image fidelity or resolution between DVCAM and Mini-DV formats. The only difference is the track pitch and hence the physical speed at which the tape passes over the heads.

so the old saying "you've seen one DV tape, you've seen 'em all" is true.

in terms of image quality, what makes the difference is the lens, the CCD and the lighting conditions used when shooting footage. all these being equal, the pattern of ones and zeros recorded on a DVCAM tape would be exactly identical to the ones and zeros on a Mini-DV tape.

my suggestion would be to keep your XL1 and just copy your program onto a DVCAM tape for submission. if you shoot good footage on the XL1, they'll never know the difference.
