Canon vixia hf s10 shooting 30p...not really 30p

I am confused. When I import my AVCHD video into Vegas Pro and I click on properties it shows up as 1080 60i. I have been reading about the
30p being wrapped in 1080i but I do not understand. What settings should I use???
When I am shooting in 1080 60i I set my properties to upper field first non-progressive. I edit and render nice video. Do I set my properties as progressive??? So is it really 30p or 1080 60i. This 30p thing that is not really 30p is driving me crazy. HELP.

Vegas detects the "wrapper" not the video inside it. The wrapper says 60i so that is what Vegas reports. Full resolution video from your camera is 1920x1080. If you are shooting progressive just use a template with that resolution, 60i, and progressive (no fields).

Preview horizontal motion in Vegas at "Full" in the preview window, better yet scroll, and you should see no jaggies.

Also keep in mind that with over twice the horizontal lines of resolution compared to NTSC SD even shooting at 60i and viewing without deinterlacing will look very good since the jaggies are so tiny.

Thanks Steve. I am still not sure I have a full grasp of what all this means....BUT....I am doing lots of tests with different settings.

Let say I render the video to Mpeg 2 for standard DVD. Should I use deinterlace?? I realize I am loosing resolution, but I want the best resolution I can get when downconverting to Mpeg 2 SD.

When you are downrezzing or changing the size of progressive footage in any way, you should make sure you leave the "select deinterlace method" tab unchecked. If you select a deinterlace method, Vegas will separate the odd and even fields, resize each field separately, then fold them back together into a new frame at the new size. This is wonderful for interlaced footage, but you lose half your vertical resolution on progressive footage. Leave this tab unchecked and each frame will be resized without being split into frames first.
