Canopus and Grass Valley/Thomson?

Thomson buys Canopus

Kind of a shocker... Thomson's been struggling for an NLE since Discreet killed Edit, but damn...what an odd choice. Maybe it's because they're the only free-standing NLE out there now.

I can't remember who owned Premiere first.

Pinnacle products-Acquired by Avid from Pinnacle
Canopus-soon to be acquired by Thomson from Canopus

I guess that leaves AIST and Magix to be snarfed up by someone soon, you think?

Yep, that's pretty surprising alright. Although, not quite as much of a "head scratcher" to me as Avid buying Pinnacle.

Given Grass Valley/Thomson's announcements about cheaper cams, and cheaper HD at IBC earlier this year, it makes a little sense, but not a lot.
I think Avid got a lot more out of the Pinnacle purchase than most folks realize, especially on the hardware side.

Speaking of Avid, they just released 5.2.1 which supports QT7 fully with H.264 AVC encoding.

Also, Adobe just announced new collections with a new Video Collection due early next year which if my sources are correct, supports the specs for authoring HD-DVD content and discs.

Exciting times indeed.
