Canopus, Hi-8, and Vegas 5

I'm sure this subject is somewhere in the 20k+ posts in this forum, but I'm tired of searching, so at risk of being scorned, I'll ask anyway:
I've recently purchased a Canopus ADVC-100 to capture video from a Sony Hi8 analog camcorder (model CCD-TR940), I'd also like to capture from VHS tapes.
From what I've read, it looks like a 1394 capture device is required to use Vegas? So that would exclude analog tapes? Or am I missing something. I didn't have any trouble capturing with Premiere, but editing was another story. Anyone have any pointers or good sites for me?
Thanks!

A 1394 card (PCI slot) and the appropriate cable are all you need to connect the Canopus box to your PC. Vegas' capture utility will see the card/box and you will capture as though it were coming from a DV camera with the exception that transport controls do not function, of course. That is something to make sure you have disabled in the Preferences section of the capture utility - disable DV controls. I've found that when using my Sony D8 camcorder as an ADC for older VHS tapes, it is necessary. The capture utility will bring your analog source in as DV ready for editing (with default settings).

Hope this is useful.

Welcome to Vegas and to this forum - lotsa great folks here.

Hey - I think I can answer this one! That makes....one! Whoo hoo! OK, maybe two...

1394 is simply firewire, which your Canopus already has an output for - if you used it for Premiere, then your PC has firewire as well. If your pc does not have a firewire input, they are readily available at your local PC store, Best Buy, etc., and are one of the easiest things to install - what OS are you running? Windows XP should recognize it right off the bat should you need to install one.

look on pricewatch.com for the cheapest 1394 firewire card you can get. I've installed over a dozen of various types with nary a problem. Don't get talked into a pricey card, they're all built to work to the same standard. Shouldn't cost more than $20

Thanks guys, I have 1394 built-in, I guess I didn't realize the Canopus box was converting the analog to digital before it saves to the hard-drive. Guess I'll d/l the trial of Vegas and try it out.

I have spent many happy hours capturing into Vegas from my Sony Hi-8 via a Canopus ADVC100. Nary a glitch. Of course, it really does look like I need a life...:)
