Cant drag pictures or footage to timeline

Will.l wrote on 7/5/2024, 10:26 AM

I'm hoping that someone can help me here I've tried every fix i came across and nothing has worked. When i drag a picture or video from my PC to Vegas (Version 18) instead of the video going to the timeline, a circle icon with a cross appears which prevents me from doing it. So far i have tried the following:

  • Ran Vegas as administrator
  • Checked properties to make sure run as administrator was not checked off
  • Enabled legacy AVC decoding
  • deleted Vegas and did a reinstallation
  • Even went as far as changing some settings in my PC's registry's editor as suggested by a YouTube video i saw but none of the above fixes worked

@Will.l Hi, post the MediaInfo of the files that won't load.

The App is called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo.
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, screen capture that page or Copy & paste the information in a new comment on here using the arrow button next to the smiley at the top of a new comment 👍

Thats for a random video that I recorded with OBS. I'm unable to with every video/picture

Gid wrote on 7/5/2024, 12:25 PM

@Will.l Hi thanks for that, I don't know much about MKV's, that is just the container but the contents say AVC & I thought they loaded into Vegas ok, I thought MKV HEVC were a problem but like I say I don't know much about them.

I'm unable to with every video/picture

Is that everything, MP4's, png, jpg .... you can't insert anything into Vegas's timeline?

@Gid Yup nothing goes into the timeline although your post gave me an idea. I converted the video I had from MKV to MP4 and for some reason now I'm able to put the video and whatever photos on the timeline. The other videos still wont go so i guess I'll have to convert those to MP4 as well. Hopefully the problem eventually fixes itself but for now i guess that's an ok workaround

Gid wrote on 7/5/2024, 12:44 PM

@Will.l 👍 Can you post MediaInfo of the other files that won't load, if the videos are all the same then fine you've posted that info but share the info of the photos. for curiousity & for the sake of sharing if nothing else 👍

Vegas acts very strange sometimes

Strange behaviour is often fixed by a "Factory reset". Instructions here https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

Make sure you tick the box to clear the cache which doesn't happen when you uninstall and reinstall.

Running anything as administrator prevents it from receiving drag-drop from anything non-administrator.

Will.l wrote on 7/5/2024, 11:22 PM

@EricLNZ Unfortunately that did not resolve this specific issue but thank you anyways, that's good information I didn't know you could do that

RogerS wrote on 7/6/2024, 3:33 AM

Don't run VEGAS as an administrator unless you want to import everything from within VEGAS.

Will.l wrote on 7/6/2024, 11:18 AM

@RogerS I am not running Vegas as administrator, i only tried the one time to see if that woule resolve the ussue but it unfiry did not

andyrpsmith wrote on 7/6/2024, 1:34 PM

Hope you don't mind if I chip in, in the past i had this problem and it maybe worth trying to just drag the media by the outer frame and not the centre. It worked for me. (you must not be in Administrator mode).

@andyrpsmith I just tried that and no shot. Thank you for the suggestion though!
