Capture Card?

I'll be getting a new computer soon, and will need a video capture card. What's a good one to use with Vegas Video? I'll be switching to a digital video camera, but have a lot of Hi8 stuff I'll want to go back to.
My main interest will be to output to SVHS and for use with a video projector in my church.
Thanks for any advice!

Dave

I just picked up one of those Sony DVMC-DA2 media converters and
it's wonderful! It has analog composite and S-Video inputs and outputs,
as well as analog stereo line level audio inputs and outputs. It connects
to the computer with a standard firewire port. It allows you to capture a
DV signal from any analog NTSC video source, and output DV back to
analog Video & Audio.

The unit is a little pricey; it lists for $400. I ordered mine for $300 from
B&H PhotoVideo in New York City. It does cost a lot more than some of
the consumer grade capture cards, but the quality, stability, and ease of
use are well worth the extra price.

I AGREE............

so far, seems to be the standard around here. Stick with the Sony Media Converter.

I also have the Sony DVMC-DA2 and it really is AWESOME! I bought mine at www.emscomputing.com for $305 after shipping costs...One thing that the last two posts forgot to mention is that you will also need a 1394 Firewire card for you PC to hook up the media converter to...I got a Maxtor OHCI compliant 1394 card for about $60...it's worked well with the converter and Vegas...

Thanks Victorious! *whew* it's very embarassing to overlook details
like that. I'd hate to have someone spend all that money on the converter
and then not be able to use it.

I should also point out that a firewire cable will be necessary. My firewire
card didn't come with a cable, and the Sony converter comes with a cable
that has the small (camera style) connectors at both ends. I had to buy
a cable at Wal*Mart with the camera connector on one end and the larger
connector at the other. But it was only about $30.

Thanks again for picking up my slack :-)

You know . . . I know nothing about Video hardware. I'm a musician by training and just stumbled onto VV and love it.

I went to a local Video shop to ask the same question. The guy there told me the SONY was a bit pricey and to just get a MATROX card. I don't have the SONY yet, but I am going to do more research and read more here. I tend to lean towards you guys for right now. Besides . . ya gets what ya pays for.

Check out the new ATI All-in-Wonder RADEON 8500DV card. It fully supports the OHCI-compliant IEEE-1394/DV capture card specifications required by Vegas Video.

Its also an incredible video card aside from the capture stuff....
