I checked out the Canopus and found the ADVC-1394 which seems to fit my needs even better. Only around $225 - seems like a good deal to me....
Another question:
Do you have to use the audio inputs on the capture card or can you use a pro-audio I/O instead. If so, how do you lock the 2 cards together? Even better, how do you find out if they CAN be locked together?
I have a Canopus ADVC-100 connected to a SIIG firewire card. I like this setup, as the ADVC-100 gives me analog out as well as in. I can connect the ADVC-100 to my 20 year old Commodore monitor and turn on external preview.
I would spend the extra money and get the ADVC-100 over any of the other ADVC boxes (with the exception of the ADVC-500). The ADVC-100 is external so you can move it easily between PC's, and it is bi-directional--> Analog to DV, and DV to Analog.
