Capture from live cam / analog video stream

Howdy,

my Mini-DV cam allows for using it as a signal converter. TV (or VHS) signal in DV out. But I can't get Vegas Video to record that. I think I managed to do that years ago in Vegas 3 but now in Vegas 4 I cant, and I can find no hint in HELP. Chances are I am mentally regressing, but somehow it makes no sense that it is not possible, just to grab the stream. But nevertheless what I try, TRANSPORT CONTOL starts the tape and that is what I get.

I would be delighted if someone could put me on a better path.

Hiyah! I have a VHS VCR .. I can get capture to HD through cap . . no problem. You say you are getting a stream, " . .. TRANSPORT CONTOL starts the tape .. . " ? Do you see the stream in Preview in Capture? - I suppose you realise you can't actually "control" the VHS end of things - yeah? You can't actually stop or start the VHS tape or any analogue stream . . . I was a bit concerned that you are saying, " TRANSPORT CONTOL starts the tape" . . Soooo, could we clear that one up first, please.

You need to turn off 'Enable DV Device Control' in capture preferences.

Guess I was not too clear on this... soooo this is how it goes.

a.) Analog video comes in from TV / VHS
b.) DV Cam is set to VCR and is showing preview image from TV / VHS
c.) DV CAM is set A/V OUt
d.) DV CAM is connected via firewire to PC

After starting CAPTURE sub applicatin the preview image form the TV/VHS aquired via DV Cam shows up, but as soon as I hit the capture button, the tape in the DV Cam starts rolling and is captured to PC.

Hope that gives you a better lead on the problem. Your help is greatly appreciate.d

I was going to ask why there was a tape in the camera as well but .....

Probably because one of the first things you'll see with most camcorders when you have device control enabled is "TAPE NOT INSERTED" or "NO TAPE IN CAMERA".

Thank you for your interest in and contribution to solving my (what thankfully turned out to be - little) problem. I did not see farss' contribution prior to answering "Grazie", to what I can only consider a server glitch at Sony. However, I was actually somewhat taken aback by the reaction of - I guess - all of you, posting in borderline hostile tones, just because I did not immediately jumped to implement farss' advice.

Guess it is just rough terrain out here

However, there's sometimes an "however" with me, I asked the questions that I did so that I culd better understand what you had done . . and you did explain very well too! I guess it was when you spoke of and my underlning the idea that you were appearing to say that clicking the device to capture, that gave us all a clue - yeah? Tell me, do you now see that one can't "control" an analogue device from within Vegas, no matter if there is a digital device - your straight-thru DVCammie convertor - in line? - I'm always concerned that when I give advice I don't always say why to do something, and why it is done in a certain way . . yeah? Knowing a little more of what is behind the adive is often more improtant than the solution being offered . . am I making sense here?

Grazie! This was really a misunderstanding. I guess it was a somewhat unelegant attempt to tell the group, that the internal camera tape drive would start, when I in fact tried to capture a analog stream already coming into the DV cam. Foot in mouth et al.
