Capture lagging on m15x

Good morning, we are having an issue with a newer Dell Alienware m15x laptop.
The issue is occurring during capturing. The preview capture window is very laggy and we end up with several files being captured instead of just one. Tried turning off HD scene detection.

The same HDR-HC3 camcorder captures perfectly on a desktop PC with the same cable and settings.

We have updated all the drivers for the laptop and that didn't make any difference.
The laptop has an i7 720QM with 8 GB of RAM and an Nvidia video card. The HC3 is connected via a 1394 port built into the m15x.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I should mention that rendering in Vegas 9 and all other programs are very snappy on the laptop. Only issue is with the capture in 9.0e.

if it works with one camera & not another it's something with the camera that doesn't capture properly.

are the heads clean?
same tape? Tape could have issues.

The camera is the same. It captures fine to the desktop PC but not to the laptop.
The thing is that this laptop performs top dog in every aspect except Vegas capture :(

Hm... my dad's sony via capture HDV & DV no problem to his USB 2 external, so you should have no problem.

Where are you capturing to? If you're capturing to your OS drive that could be the issue.

Thanks for the reply. We are capturing via 1394 not USB the model we have is about 4 years old. We have captured to a few different PCs in our home with no issues but this new laptop wants to give us trouble.

I have been capturing via firewire for many many years and never had an issue. This laptop has a SSD which should make capture a walk in the park. Maybe the 1394 port on the laptop is slightly incompatible with the HC3.

I was hoping someone would chime in and say oh yeah, just cahnge this or that registry setting and all will be well!

try attaching an ex hd and capture to that......

Sorry I misread your post. I was thinking you were referring to the newer Sony's with USB output instead of 1394.

I did try to capture to our small NAS box last night and it captured perfectly. Not sure why I didn't try that sooner, I guess I know too much! Been a computer tech for like 18 years so I always tend to think of the deeper more complicated/complex solutions first ya know.

So that is a work around for now. I need to check IRQ assignments to see if the SATA controller and the 1394 controller are the same as maybe that's what is causing the lag.

Man I haven't had to even think about IRQ assignments in sooo long that I forgot about it.
