Capture only gets 32khz from DV sometimes... WHY?

I have a Panasonic PVDV51 and this happens:

When using the capture tape, or capture video from STOP position, the audio always says 32khz. (It was recorded in 16bit 48khz).

If I start capturing from a stream that is already playing, then it comes out right at 48khz.

I can only assume that the camera first reports 32khz because it hasn't played any tape yet to know it is 48khz and that capture is going with the first thing it heard (32).

What happens to the audio in this case? Is it converted to 32khz? Is just the first second 32khz and the rest 48khz? Are there any settings to prevent this from happening?

Thanks,

Alan

The DV audio spec allows for two audio recording modes:

1)2 track 48kHz 16 bit audio
2)4 track 32kHz 12 bit audio (most cams use only 2 of those tracks)

My guess is that VF just assumes the default of most cams is the 32kHz 12bit audio (cause it is for many cams).

However, most DV capture programs simply take the DV stream from the camcorder and write it to disk with no modification. So your sound should still be 48kHz. You can verify this in VF by switching the media pool view to "detailed" and scrolling right until you see the sampling rate of your clips.

If the sound isn't 48kHz, then something is wrong.
