Capture Problems

I updated my Windows XP lately and restored some settings on my computer and it will no longer recognize my son's Canon XLS1 camera - I tried to follow some of the previous advise (e.g. go to options/preferences/video device? to click OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394) and that doesn't show up?

Any other suggestions? My son is about to kill me as his video projects for school are all due next week . . . Is the TI IEEE card fully compliant or do I need a new one of those?

Does the camera show up with any other programs - might want to do a quick check to see if it's available as a source for moviemaker or winmedia 9 encoder. If so, try reinstalling Vegas &/or your capture software with the latest versions (might have to do an uninstall & then an install).

If that doesn't do it, please post additional info: system specs, software used to capture, make and model of firewire card, what upgrades were performed that broke things, why you restored settings (was something else broke?), at any rate as much detail as possible...

In general: Didn't see anything specific when I just did a quick search of the k/ base at MS... If you upgraded an earlier version of windows to winxp, might want to try reinstalling the firewire card. If you upgraded to SP1, a *lot* of folks have had problems after that update. You wrote that you restored some settings (I assume with System Restore), so might want to try other restore points or undoing the restore, if only to see if you get the camera back.

Look for anything about this on the Canon web site & do a web search for similar problems - do the same for the firewire card - and if your prob started after SP1, make sure to include that with your search terms. See if there's a new driver for the firewire card, & check out the MS site for any related articles on that brand/model card.

Check the device manager in windows to make sure the firewire card etc. are all working properly - if you recently updated the driver for the card there should also be a rollback driver option on the properties dialog for the card in device manager. Could try removing the card in device manager (uninstalling it) and then reinstall it.

If you think the problem could be the firewire card, if desperate, buy one locally at some place like Best Buy & if it doesn't work take it back.

As a worst case scenareo if nothing else seems to work, could try to apply SP1, whether 1st or 2nd try, and if that doesn't work, winxp has a repair option - start just like you're doing an install, but select the repair option during install (it takes a few screens to get there, and you don't want anything that says something about recovery or console or anything - just repair this install of windows).

If nothing else, remind your son that tomorrow is Mom's day and he HAS to forgive you.
